The United States is known as a diverse country with various foreigners traveling and immigrating each year. People in the United States should learn how to understand and speak a foreign language because it can limit the barriers between different people and cultures and can also benefit themselves. The U.S. Department of Commerce, National Travel and Tourism Office covered that a record of “ 77.5 million international visitors traveled to the U.S. in 2015”. English is becoming an international language because the English language is being taught nationwide such as in Asia and Europe. According to the Albert Henry’s article “Which countries speak English as a second language and why” from Quora states that 55 percent of the population speak English in the Philippines, 56 percent of the population in Germany, and “over hald of all the people in Nigeria” speak English. Accordingly, most of the foreign tourists that travel to the United States are capable of understanding and speaking English. Meanwhile, English speakers in America that do not learn a second language have a hard time when traveling to other countries. Obama states in the town hall meeting in Powder Spring, when tourists from Europe travel to the U.S. “ they all speak English, they speak French, they speak German”, but when Americans travel to Europe “ all we can say is merci beaucoup”. Instead of asking strangers if they speak English, it can save you time because you will be able to navigate your way around. Knowing a foreign language can also benefit your way of appreciating and learning about cultures and the history of others who are different from our ethnic backgrounds.
