Argumentative Essay On Electric Cars

All the talk about electric cars makes them sound efficient for our environment. Electric

cars are a good idea, but they present a host of problems that make them useless for most

consumers. The fact that most of these cars are only two-seaters eliminates families from driving

them, unless they have it as a second car. Electric cars are also incredibly unsafe. This is not the

car parents want to buy for their child's sixteenth birthday. Additional problematic concern for

electric cars are range anxiety. Road trips will never be the same for the consumer of the electric

car. Charge stations lack in popularity, so the only place one must fully charge their car, is at

home. Going on a road trip in an electric car would be a terrible

There are also those times when people take wrong turns and end up going miles’ out of

their way trying to get back on track. Finding a gas station is a lot more likely than finding a

charge station. Electric cars are a good idea, they just have too many issues right now to be

considered practical. No one is against making the Earth a greener healthier place to live, electric

cars are not our answer yet. One of the biggest fights electric cars have going for them is the amount of money

everyone is supposed to save by not having to pay for gas anymore, but has anyone ever actually

thought about how many miles they would have to drive before they started to save money?

Louis Woodhill figured it out. With how much more expensive electric cars are than

regular gas powered vehicles, a person would have to drive one hundred and ninety-seven

thousand miles before they technically made any money off their car (Woodhill). If a person wants to buy a smart car, they should consider purchasing a plug-in hybrid.

Due to technology constraints, even a top EV model, such as the Tesla Model S, can only run for 215 miles until its batteries are depleted. Meanwhile, an average HEV like the Prius can be driven for 500 miles before its batteries and fuel tank are emptied (EPA's MPG Ratings). This, coupled with the lack of public charging station, makes EVs unsuitable for long range transport. However, recent study shows that the average travel distance in the US is just 50 miles per day, as shown in figure 3 (Haaren). This distance can be covered by most EVs, including the lowest priced models such as the Nissan Leaf (EPA's MPG…

According to Henry Lee, the director of the Environment and Natural Resources program at Harvard University, electric vehicles could make roads by 2020 to 2030, but instead for now car-makers should focus on manufacturing increasingly efficient gas-powered vehicles. Walter McManus, an economist and a former market analyst at General Motors, praises the Obama administration’s new fuel efficiency standards, to double fuel efficiency for U.S. cars and light trucks to 54.5 miles per gallon by 2025. “Manufacturers will have to make everything lighter across their fleet… They’ll have to address all of the ways that today’s cars use energy,” he deducts.…

An investigation was done in the areas of types of benefits suggested by many consumer trends, and the future of hybrid technology. A focus group of people who in recent times bought cars, both hybrids and non-hybrids, revealed what consumers look for in their cars. Study of the needs of hybrid technology helped determine how feasible widespread change to hybrids would be in the future. With all the information taken into account, I concluded that hybrids have several issues that offset their fuel efficiency. Their higher cost both turns consumers away and makes the vehicles a less attractive economic investment.…
