Many different types of service dogs are used depending on what disability they work with. In general, assistance dogs can perform everyday tasks that the owner may not be able to complete on their own. These can include opening doors, putting on clothing, and switching on and off lights. Some of these dogs can also perform other tasks such barking when help is needed and finding other humans in an emergency. There are many illnesses, both physical and mental, that these dogs can help with. Physical disabilities would be any physical impairment that prevents restricts someone from doing certain tasks. These can be caused from injury, illness or can be congenital. Such disabilities can include impaired hearing, blindness, seizures, and impaired mobility. People with impaired mobility are usually missing extremities and/or have to use a wheelchair. Service dogs have also been used for patients with mental illnesses. This is any impairment that is pertaining to the mind and can conflict with the individual’s maturation, social interactions and/or learning. These disabilities can include autism, post-traumatic stress disorder, and depression. Autism can cause many social problems.
