In “a flipped classroom is one in which students view a video that replaces live instruction at home and do "homework" in class. Thus, class time is available for students to work with one another and in small groups or individually with the teacher” (Cohen & Brugar, 2013). I had not heard of a flipped classroom previously, I knew that there were webinars that upper level students and educators could view, but where a middle school or high school student could experience flipped learning is new to me. This idea is great because there were several times I assigned a reading as homework in hopes of having engaging conversations and questions in class, only to ask a question from the assigned reading and just experience awkward silence. I would love to be able to flip my science classes thus allowing my students more time in engaging conversations and lab experiments. Normally in my class there is a lecture over content, discussion, problem solving, re-teaching and then a lab experiment to test content. If my students can obtain a lecture at home; discussion, problem solving and re-teaching can happen at a quicker rate which would leave more time for more laboratory experiments. Students will also get the opportunity to re-visit videos and review them when they have questions, parents can also view them, therefore they can begin to understand what their students are learning. Foremost the biggest problem is that not all students have access to computers at home or near to them, if they do, several won’t have unlimited internet access or have to share home computers with others in their home. This does put vast restrictions on who can and can’t participate in online classes, flipped classes or who can collaborate on google docs and furthermore. A majority of students have phones that they can use to participate in these classes and as technology improves, additional applications for these classes will be available on
