Over 401 million people all over the world suffer from depression and schizophrenia. There is a link between mental illness and creative genius, and scientists have found that eminently creative individuals have a much higher rate of chronic depression. On the other hand, it has also been proven that depression is the cause of two-thirds of the suicides in the United States every year. If those with depression and schizophrenia are not forced to get treated, the illnesses could cause self-harm or even death. However, famous creative geniuses who have suffered from depression and schizophrenia claim that their illness is the reason for their creativity and works of art and without this illness, they would not be able to produce the same work. …show more content…
Forcing those with depression or schizophrenia to get treated is doing exactly that, taking away their right to choose. No matter what the consequences of lack of medication will do for someone with these illnesses, it is unethical to go against their wishes and give them medication (Ralston, 2009). People with depression and schizophrenia usually have specific reasons for not wanting to get treated. Either they do not have enough money for insurance and health care and treatment or they feel that the reason for their creativity is their illness and if they were not sick with this illness, they also would not be creative and make such amazing art, books, movies, songs, etc. Taking away the choice of whether or not patients want to get treated for depression and schizophrenia is immoral and is going against their free …show more content…
There is a link between mental illness, creativity, and heredity which is shown in multiple studies including one done by Nancy Andreasen who is a neuroscientist who studies creativity and the brain. In this study, 30 creative writers, 30 matched control subjects, and both of their families were tested for mental illness and creativity. The creative writers and matched control subjects both had high IQs, but the creative writers had a much higher rate of mental illness. The writers’ families also showed a higher rate of creativity and possible mental illness demonstrating that there is a link between genetics and these traits (Andreasen, 1987). Another example of the link between mental illness, genius, and heredity is in Kurt Vonnegut (the prominent writer) and his family. Andreasen worked closely with Vonnegut during a case study at the University of Iowa and found that not only was he mentally ill and a creative genius, but most of his family members were also mentally ill and creative (Andreasen, 2014). The relationship between mental illness and genius is shown through genetics and how certain genes are passed on through families that make future generations more likely to possess a mental illness, creativity, or both. Since these illnesses and creativity can be found on the same genes, it shows that in order to treat one, you would have to treat the

Art reflects life: as society and its institutions change, art remains as a record of historical thoughts and practices. The way in which society views and treats those suffering with mental illness varies depending on the contemporary theory for its cause and its place among society. As man progressed from the superstitious dogma on mental illness surrounding the Medieval period, theories and cures towards mental illness increased in their analytic methods, though it certainly took centuries to overcome the stigma surrounding it. Albrecht Dürer’s Melancholia I (Figure 1), William Hogarth’s A Rake’s Progress: The Madhouse (Figure 2), and Vincent van Gogh’s Self Portrait with Bandaged Ear and Pipe (Figure 3) reflect their period’s treatment…

As a result of a doctor-assisted death case, the Supreme Court of Canada ruled that the law, which prohibits anyone assisting in the termination of an individual’s life, had to be altered. Months later, when the Liberal’s legislation came to fruition, controversy spiked as people debated whether or not this new law was an adequate response to the Supreme Court ruling. With the desire to protect vulnerable people in mind, the Liberal’s answer fulfilled the requirements of the high court. By reviewing the criteria for eligibility, the human rights of Canadian citizens, and the reasoning behind not including mental health, it becomes apparent that the Liberal’s response was acceptable. Some would argue that the Liberal’s response to the Supreme…

In Western culture, comparisons are constructed in an almost natural manner as a way for people to form an understanding of foreign ideas and concepts. The diagnosis and treatment of mental illnesses across the world vary from that of Western Culture; thus, it becomes difficult to define the nature of a disorder as it pertains to each individual culture. There is a tendency of miscommunication of the language as well as a variance in the causations of the disorders that create a cultural barrier. In order to compare mental illnesses and determine the most efficient psychiatric diagnosis and treatment, the relationship between the social environment and the genetic contributions must be analyzed.…

This comparative analysis has also shown me that when it comes to those who have been labelled as 'mentally ill ', writers are either very supportive of, or very against medication as a remedy. I think that the writers who are very supportive of medication have not been critical enough about when it is appropriate and inappropriate to be administering medication to individuals as some do not need it. There is also much confusion about what is being administered and why, and this needs to be changed (LeFrancois & Diamond, 2014). On the other side of things, writers who are very against medication have perhaps been too critical. Views that were brought forward were that because of so much resistance, the drugs must be doing horrible things to the individual.…

Is mental illness a common theme in successful artists? Many artists in the twentieth century suffered from mental illness, but went undiagnosed because there was not as extensive research there is nowadays. Some artists that have been suspected of having a mental illness are Marina Abramovic, Edvard Munch, Jackson Pollock, and Vincent Van Gogh. Those suffering from mental illness think very differently than those without. This could be the reasoning for why these artists have created works that are so unique from others at the time and have been deemed as masterpieces.…
