After the NICE guidelines were posted., the Australians spoke out and said they still list the SSRI's as their top choice for treatment. They did agree that four studies showed that SSRI's did not help symptoms of PTSD.
Then, in 2008, the Institute of Medicine released an assessment stating that the controlled studies they conducted showed that no drugs have adequate data to prove they were effective in treating PTSD (Boschert 38). Complimentary and Alternative Medications (CAM) are considered non-standard treatment options for PTSD. CAM treatments include; Acupuncture, Mediation, and Yoga. A CAM study was conducted by Geisel School of Medicine at Dartmouth College (Roberts 158). The participants were four women who had PTSD that witnessed a murder. Each of the women were having nightmares at night and reliving the murder in their dreams. All four women showed no change after three weeks of treatments, but after the sixth week they started feeling less anxious and their nightmares were coming every other night instead. After the ninth week of the study the women were back to having nightmares every night again. Dr. George Bishop, the participants physician, started each of the ladies on the SSRI Zoloft medication, as they continued the CAM treatments, and started some CBT counseling sessions.(Roberts
