Cupping therapy was introduced in a mass scale recently during the 2016 Olympic games in Rio, Brazil. Michael Phelps and other Olympic athletes were seen with large circular spots on their bodies. Which then introduced the viewer to cupping therapy. Many of the Olympic commentators gave their opinions on if the therapy worked or not while others sought expert opinions from leading health care practioners. The consensus was to stick with modern western medicine. However, the viewers will come to their own conclusion on whether or not these Olympians are on to something great. History and Origin

However, between 1959 and 2008, a series of research was implemented including twenty-two clinical controlled trials, seventy-three randomized control trials, three hundred and seventy-three case series, and eighty-two case reports. Within all of those research studies reported there were no serious negative side effects in any of the studies. It was found that cupping is linked to having a greater short-term clinical benefit then the usual medical care. Additional research was done on cupping for the treatment of carpal tunnel and the results found that cupping therapy may be effective in decreasing wrist pain. Moreover, cupping therapy proved to have positive effects on patients reporting pain from gouty arthritis (Mahdavi, Ghazanfari, Aghajani, Danyali, & Naseri, 2014). In a study performed by Jiang and Liang, the study suggested that potential complications can arise depending on the type of cup used, and frequency of cupping therapy. It was documented that patients had both dermal vascular damage consisting of purpura, ecchymosis, and abrasions. It was also noted that in some cases a high serum cholesterol was noted, putting patients at risk for cardiovascular aliments (Mehtaa & Dhapteb, 2015). Specifically, according to the studies it was proven that cupping therapy can be helpful in the treatment of pain. It could be beneficial to have additional studies into the matter.
