Argumentative Essay On Critical Thinking

Articles by Hayes and Macmillan are very straight forward in the way about talking about critical thinking, while, on the other hand the article by West, puts you to the test of critical thinking, besides your beliefs. Macmillan gives you a step by step process on how to critical think and on the other end Hayes states that we should stop trying to “teach” it. West I just freaking crazy. Saying it is one of the “most important skills you will need to learn as a student,” Macmillan believes being successful starts with critical thinking. Honestly, I personally suck at critical thinking, yet I have been very successful so far in life. There are many important skills in life that you need to be learning to prepare you for a world outside of school. Yes, critical thinking is a good skill to have, but it doesn't determine your success in life. Trying to see past my point of view on this situation, I continue to read on to Hayes’s article. Where I concurred with his opinion for the most part, his argument completely contradicted with Macmillan’s. He doesn't believe that critical thinking can be taught, which I agree with but people sometimes need a little push to help them understand what exactly critical thinking …show more content…
Of course, this can become difficult when you don’t particularly agree with the subject at hand, that is why the third and final article by West was the perfect way to tie this all together. Knowing that people have very, very strong opinions, they will disagree, agree, or really just to care. Whatever the situation, you will have to put that aside and asses the situation. West was VERY strongly opinionated on something that I completely disagree with, and of course I am very opinionated one the subject as well, but you have to realize when thinking about articles like this, that they are biased, there might not be all facts in there, their opinion is the main

Critical Thinking is the objective analysis and evaluation of an issue in order to form a judgment. A time using critical thinking is when I enrolled into school after being out of school for some years. Feeling apprehensive about taking courses online for the first time, I did not know what to expect or did not know if was able to complete the assignments. Before I knew about the resources that the school offered. Expressing my concerns to one of my close friends who has already completed their bachelor’s degree.…

I can honestly say I have never really looked at Critical Thinking the way I see it now. Weak critical thinkers lack the ability to look at things from different points of view being true or not true. Strong critical thinkers have the ability to see things, and question every angle of their way of thinking, and come up with a theory or realistic view or stand point on that topic or discussion. The quality of critical thinking, I feel I am a strong critical thinking! My best quality is Intellectual courage: the willingness to face and fairly assess ideas, beliefs, or viewpoints to which they have not given a serious hearing, regardless of one's strong negative reactions to them.…

Mistakes are inevitable, we all make them. Some of the biggest mistakes we make are when we have a lack of discernment. This lack of discernment is due to our inability to critical think. Dr. Gerald Nosich, a professor in the field of critical thinking, wrote the book: “Learning To Think Things Through: a guide to critical thinking across the curriculum.” In regard to critical thinking, Nosich states: “Two conditions are necessary for critical thinking.…

In one of my cited text it states, “Most college faculty don’t realize that they lack a substantive concept of critical thinking, they believe that they sufficiently understand critical thinking, and assume they are already teaching students it.” Because of this, we as the students often find ourselves in a lecture, writing for memorization, and (largely ineffective) short-term study habits are still the norm in college instruction and teaching today. With this in mind, the students can engage in what they are learning but they are often unfathomable because of this scholars are fixed to grasp similar situations instead of more complex ones. Also in one of my cited text it states,”Critical thinking is the art of thinking about thinking with a view to improving it. Critical thinkers seek to improve thinking, in three interrelated phases.…

Critical thinking, the ability and willingness to think clearly of claim and make objective judgements based on rational and supported evidence rather than emotion or personal bias, does not only improve individual’s comprehension and problem-solving abilities, expressing ideas, self -reflection (justify and reflect values and decisions), its skills (analysis, reasoning, interpretation and creativity) are essential in domains as health science and education. I firmly believe that the term "critical thinking" is in fact far less related to strict guidelines of what is or is not critical thinking, but rather the ability to step back from any given practice, problem - anything really - and reexamine it anew. When companies are asking for people who have critical thinking skills it's not that they are asking for employees to sit down, take a test where they "critically think" about different scenarios, and then describe the "right" answer - and I believe that is what most students believe they are being asked to do - but rather that the company is asking you to sit down and examine those scenarios to see what "weird" ideas you can come up with. Because being weird is how you innovate, and as economies become more competitive than at any point in human history companies have to be innovating constantly in order to stay alive.…

The diverse ways in which critical thinking can be applied are astonishing. One may find themselves in a group project working towards a common goal and an individual would find it immensely helpful to be able to process the ideas or statements and go through steps exploring possible problems, solutions, and meanings. In a professional environment, possessing this skill would demonstrate not only competency, but leadership. In a meeting, one may be asked what one thinks of the ideas that have been discussed and it would serve one well to be able to analytically and intellectually reflect on what has been discussed and arrive at an answer to a problem that one’s peers would comprehend. Possessing the skill of thinking critically is crucial in all parts of life; it is a skill that will be easily noticed and assist one in answering any question that…

Critical thinking could provide a safer and more productive future for the upcoming adults. State education departments require so much essential material to be taught in such little time that critical thinking can’t be incorporated into the classes. In the following statement, Frank Breslin says, “In order to cover the curriculum, courses must be taught quickly, superficially, and uncritically, the infallible way of boring students. This is a great source of frustration to teachers, who would rather teach their courses in depth in order to give students an informed understanding of the issues involved”(Why Public Schools Don't Teach Critical Thinking-Part 1, Frank Breslin). This statement alone proves that there needs to be a change in the school system.…

Critical thinking is a key point in understanding and thinking through new and different ideas and possibilities. When it comes to the speech “You are not Special” by David McCullogh Jr. there is a need to look over things critically. The speech itself may seem one sided, but as with almost anything, there are two ways of looking at it. When looking critically at the speech there are more things to be learned and ideas to understand. In critical thinking, it helps to think of others ideas and the way they would think of things.…

Critical thinking is not only a process, but a skill that develops over the course of a person’s life. Dr. Linda Elder, the Assistant Director of the Center for Critical Thinking, created a stage theory of critical thinking development that defines critical thinking into six stages. In reference to the article by Linda Elder and Richard Paul “Critical Thinking Development: A Stage Theory,” I believe that stage four, the practicing thinker, best represents my development as a thinker. As previously mentioned, Dr. Linda Elder’s stage theory of critical thinking development consists of six stages. In stage one, Linda Elder argues that a majority of people begin heavily embedded in this stage of the “unreflective thinker.”…
