Contact sports can cause concussions and injure the brain. In an article written by Arthur L. Caplan and Lee H. Igel from the NYU Sports & Society Program, researchers at Boston University studied a group of retired NFL players and divided the players into two groups: one group who played tackle football before twelve and another who played at an older age. The results showed that the NFL players who played before twelve did 20% worse on the test than those who played later. Caplan and Igel also wrote about how a twelve year old brain is still growing. Hitting the head repeatedly with a soccer ball can damage the brain and increase problems in the future. This tells us that a child's brain is very fragile. Secondly, John Madden, one of the greatest football coaches, quoted in the same article written by Caplan and Igel, “I’m a firm believer that there’s no way that a six-year-old should have a helmet on and learn a tackling drill....They can play flag football.
