Americans today tend to believe that we live in a world filled with nonconformists; however, we all have conformed more than once. People may not know they are conforming; unfortunately, in reality they are! Nonconformists in this world is seen as freakish or weird individuals. Furthermore if your happiness is being different, in no way that will make you weird. Everyone is unique in their own way. Do not feel dreadful about your differences. When it comes to the topic of conformity, most of us will readily agree that we live in a world full of people who want to fit in. Where this agreement usually ends; nevertheless, is on the question of why do we feel this way about conformity? Whereas some are convinced that individuals that want to stand out are creative and extraordinary, others maintain that it is not normal to be odd or different from society. One person I know of is proud to be who they are is Leopard Man. Tom Leopard, “Leopard Man” is an individual who tattooed his whole body in leopard print to be different. ¨Dangerous Conformity¨ is a video of experiments on conformity. For instance, they put a group of actors in a room with one normal person for a job interview and behind a door, they made a fake fire with smoke coming out from under the door. Specifically, the actors were told to stay still and act like nothing is happening so they can see if the person conforms and stays still or non conforms and evacuates the building. The producers ran several tests and most of the people stayed, one person evacuated right when they saw the smoke. Using this experiment shows that the people who waited so long to realize to finally evacuate could have possibly already been dead. The one person who got out of the smoke filled room safely was an example of a non conformist. Conforming could mean life or death in any
