Pros and Cons of Co-Sleeping Co-sleeping is defined as “the standard custom, in collectivist cultures, of having a child and parent share a bed” (Belsky, 2010, p. 89). The topic of co-sleeping has definitely sparked a flame in today’s culture, marking those who choose either side as dumb and irresponsible. A major advantage to co-sleeping, that is the dream of most parents, is that co-sleeping can cause the child to fall asleep quicker, with fewer interruptions in the night. Parents and families will always agree to disagree on this issue, but the standpoint they take does not make them right or wrong. Co-sleeping has as many advantages as disadvantages, making it harder to decide which position is right or wrong. Regardless of your preference on whether to co-sleep or not, this does not make you an irresponsible, horrible parent. Whatever standpoint you choose to make on this issue, there will generally be that one person who will drag you through the coals for your decision, marking you as the “bad parent”.
