Global Warming: Difference Between Climate And Volcanoes

Improved Essays
Perhaps the most vital thing to address is the difference between climate and weather, because so many people don 't know the difference. Weather is what happens on a short time scale--from day to day, while climate is more long term, and is the long term trend over hundreds to thousands of years. We are releasing tons of gases and dust particles into the earth 's atmosphere every day, and so the salient question becomes: What type of effect do these gases have on our atmosphere? Most climate scientists would agree that the earth 's climate is influenced by many different factors, but the most fundamental concept in climate science is that the incoming solar energy is balanced by the outgoing long-wave energy. Disrupting this balance in …show more content…
Aerosols, which are basically tiny dust particles that actually reflect sunlight, meaning they deter the incoming energy that reaches the surface from the sun, this means that they can have a global cooling effect. Volcanoes are a natural mechanism through which aerosols are put into the atmosphere. One example of an aerosol, particularly a volcanic aerosol is sulfate (SO4). Volcanoes release sulfate when they erupt and create a global cooling effect, this cooling effect is particularly effective when the sulfate reaches the stratosphere which is about 10 km up. The mount Pinatubo eruption of 1991 had a global cooling effect, this effect was noted by a drop in the rate of warming that was going on in the early 90s as a result of global warming from CO2 emissions. Although volcanoes are a natural mechanism by which aerosols enter the atmosphere, anthropogenic aerosol release is also a possibility. Whenever you kick dust up into the air, you are putting aerosols into the atmosphere, the only difference between a volcano and anthropogenic dust is that the latter doesn 't usually reach the stratosphere, so it stay down closer to the surface, giving it a lower residence …show more content…
Of course, scientifically this is absurd--only a basic understanding of scientific processes is required to understand that pollutants we put into the atmosphere have an effect the environment. We must convince, and educate the general product about the externalities of polluting our planet. Once the general public has the basic knowledge to understand this concept, we will begin to see change--a shift from coal and fossil fuels to renewable energies such as solar and wind. As we mentioned earlier, these pollutants, particularly CO2 have a long residence time, meaning that even if we stop polluting the atmosphere all together, right now, which is wildly unrealistic, we would still have to worry about all the CO2 that 's already there! In conclusion, the gasses and pollutants put into out atmosphere effect it ways you might not think is possible, so each person 's carbon footprint matters and has an effect on the future climate of our

It is plan to see that we are putting something in the air that definitely should not be there. In The Sixth Extinction Kolbert points out that if we continue to pump carbon into the atmosphere the global temperature will increase between three and seven degrees in a few years. I can agree with the fact that we are not paying attention enough to emissions coming from out cars and we are not really trying to carpool. So again, I can see how I may be contributing to the increase in temperature which in turn is melting the polar icecaps at an alarming rate. It is not a coincidence that we are starting to have a lot of floods and tornados.…

The fraction of carbon dioxide that we breathe is growing: It just crossed 400 parts per million, and high-end estimates concluding from current trends suggest it will hit 1,000 ppm by the year 2100. At that concentration, compared to the air we breathe now, human cognitive ability reduces by 21 percent. Other things in the hotter air are even scarier, with small increases in pollution capable of shortening people’s lives by eleven years. By 2090, as many as 2 billion people will be breathing air higher than the WHO “safe” level (WHO 8); one paper last month showed that a pregnant mother’s exposure to ozone raises the child’s risk of autism, which does make you think again about the autism epidemic in West Hollywood.…

Is cutting back on greenhouse gas emissions a plausible idea for decreasing climate change or does society need to accept its fate? Humanity’s carbon dioxide and greenhouse gas emission levels are rapidly increasing from levels that were once recorded back in the 1900s and so on. Earth’s temperature is increasing and because of this, numerous environments are being affected by this. The question is, how can society help decrease the levels of toxic gases that are ruining our ecosystem? By decreasing the usage of such gases like carbon dioxide and greenhouse gas emissions, it could help better the environment.…

Climate scientists agree the main cause of climate change is greenhouse gas emissions. Created when sunlight reaches the Earth’s surface, it can either be absorbed by the Earth or reflected back into space. The planet releases some of the energy back into the atmosphere when the rest is absorbed as heat. These gases like carbon dioxide, methane, and water vapor: absorb the energy, decelerating or inhibiting the loss of heat back into space. Therefore the gases acting like a blanket, causing the Earth to increase in temperature.…

To clarify we have heaters that produce Co2 when they heat up the classroom and we also have cars and buses that also produce a lot of Co2. In the video Teachers Tv Climate Change by Teachers Tv it states humans waste seven gigatons of carbon dioxide a year! To clarify we contribute to that seven gigatons of Co2. The video also states that is the climate keeps getting hotter due to all the carbon dioxide it can lead the polar ice caps to melt completely leaving animals without a home and major floods on coastal states. What I’m trying to show is that we at Bancroft are also contributing to what could eventually be the end of human life.…

The recent Eyjafjalajakul eruption (2010) caused major global disruption, especially to Northern Europe. In this instance, the ice cap situated on top of the main vent was primary in causing the major ash cloud: this is another physical factor. Eruptions can also occur on hotspots, but the magma associated with these volcanoes is generally of low viscosity and basic in nature, producing similar events to those found at divergent boundaries. Volcanoes generally don`t form at collision boundaries. Whilst 75% of all volcanic material…

Climate change has become a worldwide controversial topic in the world. There have been many debates and many arguments among scientists, politicians, climatologists, and more about this topic. Most people, including myself, is that humans are causing the climate to change and it is going to negatively affect us in the future due to increase levels of carbon dioxide. While skeptics believe that humans are not the cause, the main cause is natural variability. The climate is changing because of nature and the increase of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere can be a positive thing.…

Although this will be difficult, according to Sharon Begley in “Too much hot air” because governments believe that capping greenhouse gases could cripple their economy, if enough people make a real stand towards the government, they may rethink their policy’s (Begley). Tidwell also explains that if these limits or laws are not reached, the consequences could have drastic natural effects on human life. With the lives of millions in the balance, humans need to stop taking the environment for granted and make a real change of the situation. Tidwell tells us that scientists have done…

My Fellow Americans, I am sure that many, if not all, of you are aware of the debate surrounding climate change. The issue has been well-covered in the media, with positions being taken on all sides of the issue. There are those that have sounded the alarm, warning of impending doom should we fail to act. Some have argued that climate change is but a passing fad, a nonissue that poses no real threat to our way of life. Others still have carved out positions in between these two extremes.…

Alejandro Vieyra Mr. Moody English 4 5 December 2016 Climate Change Must Stop Climate change is the changing of weather patterns in regions all around the world. The primary cause of climate change is the appreciable amount of fossil fuel emissions that humans are sending into the atmosphere. These emissions consist of carbon dioxide that ultimately retain more heat in our atmosphere than needed, thus elevating the temperature everywhere around the globe and damaging ecosystems greatly. Many people, including politicians and scientists, believe that climate change is simply a hoax. Although some prefer to believe that climate change is fake and we have nothing to worry about, there are concrete facts that prove these individuals wrong.…

Everyone has heard the term global warming, but how is this major issue being defined? To many people, global warming is defined as the steady rise of the Earth’s temperature from an excess of carbon dioxide being released into the atmosphere. To numberless others, global warming is simply that the climate change and carbon emission has nothing to do with it. While this last definition seems to be the easiest due to being less scary and not having to deal with the problem, it does not mean it is correct. As difficult as it maybe to accept the truth, people are slowly making their own home an oven; therefore, leading to fluctuations in the weather patterns, drastically rising sea levels, the extinction of many species, and an overabundance of…

Specific Purpose To inform individuals about the importance of climate change, how it affects each and everyone of us. Introduction Humans have made extreme modifications to the earth 's environment in little more than a century, making climate change a serious issue ( Taylor 1999) The source for the expansion of climate change is from human activity. It has been proven that there is a correlation between human activity and climate change. As the human population increases the demand for resources also increases, thus causing irreversible effects to the atmosphere, the land, and the oceans.…
