As we advanced into the modern day society with its technological advancements, many high schools have withdrawn from teaching civic courses in classrooms. This was caused by the differing views on politics and many controversial issues related to it. However, with the descending numbers in voter turnout each year and the controversy surrounding the 2016 presidential election, many want to bring civic education back into the spotlight. Although many experts do agree that bringing civic education is crucial to the future of our government and citizens, they have distinctive plans as to how we should implement civic education in high schools. Students are not being properly educated to become good citizens because students who belong to a minority group are not provided with the same level of civic education, civic education is not prioritized in schools and students are not getting the opportunity to have first-hand experience in civic learning practices. …show more content…
This began in the 1950’s, 60’s and 70’s because of many controversial political actions during that time. For example, as mentioned by Levine “Schools and parents may have become reluctant to encourage students to discuss them” (108). Levine is referring to The Vietnam War, Watergate scandal and the resignation of the president which caused parents and students to not discuss these controversial topics. Furthermore, technological advancements shifted the priority in many schools. Also stated by Paul Baumann “Sputnik spurred American schools to devote more hours to math and science” (108). Evidently, it is because of the new technology and inventions that more people started to become intrigued by the science behind these technologies, which gave more preference to subjects that till today are the focal point in high
