Brown v. Board of Education was a benchmark case in a long list of civil rights decisions that overturned the precedent of segregation that was upheld in the Supreme Court case Plessy V. Ferguson. The Brown case dealt with the issue of school segregation solely based on a student’s race and if all “tangible things” being equal, would the student in the minority school still be deprived of their “right to equal educational opportunities”? The Supreme Court had to decide if a precedent of separate but equal, as decided in Plessy, applied to schools? Also, would the practice of segregating schools based solely on race hinder a student’s right to an education? After deliberation, the Supreme Court held that the practice of public school segregation was unjust because different schooling facilities had no way of being equal. Due to segregation practices, students were devoid of the equal protection clause as upheld by the fourteenth amendment. The court looked at historical and psychological arguments to form their reasoning in the Brown case.

The court argued that segregation “denotes the inferiority of the negro group”, but the court should have gone on to explain why society makes black citizens feel inferior. African Americans have a long history of unjust treatment in the United State stemming from the nation's history of slavery, Jim Crow Laws, and racial hate crimes. The systematic racism experienced by black citizens in the United States explains why they have experienced feelings of inferiority. People are not born inferior, therefore, the physiological studies needed to analyze and explain why Black citizens feel inferior.
