Originally, W.D. Boyce founded Boys Scouts of America (or BSA) in 1910, as part of the international scout movement. The main purpose of BSA was to teach patriotism, courage, self-reliance, and kindred values. Later, George J. Fisher stated that the BSA’s mission was “to prepare young people to make ethical and moral choices over their lifetimes by instilling in them the values of the Scout Oath and Law”. Membership begins with cub scouting, this program is for ages 7 to 11 and is the largest. There is also the flagship program “boy scouting”, this program is for ages 11 to 18.

For example, just this year the air force celebrated pride month for the first time ever. Even though some level of progress has been made, the fight for gay rights is still ongoing. The inclusion of gay scouts in the BSA will allow the youth the same scouting experience as their heterosexual counterparts. Moreover, it will improve social cohesion, and improve health outcomes among gay scouts.
