Argumentative Essay On Black Fish

Watching documentaries has taken up a considerable amount of my time. Documentaries are entertaining and, at the same time, educational. Many documentaries have made an impact in my life and taught me something valuable. Blackfish by Gabriela Cowperthwaite, The Cove by Louie Psihoyos, and Food Inc by Robert Kenner are four documentaries that have changed my outlook on life and caused me to rethink my assumptions about my life and how my actions impact on the world around me. Blackfish is about a killer whale named Tilikum and how his treatment at Sea World contributed to his mental issues that led him to attack human beings. Before watching the documentary, I had known that Sea World did not treat its animals with care, but I did not realize …show more content…
A friend recommended that I watch this documentary after we had a discussion of Blackfish, and I am glad I did as I feel more educated about environmental issues. Before watching, I had always wanted to go to one of those places where you could pay to swim with dolphins. However, after watching, I knew that I could never do that without feeling guilty. Dolphins are captured and taken from a cove in Japan and sold for millions of dollars to places like that. I’m glad I educated myself on the topic because if I had paid money to support this industry, I would have felt terrible. So many animals, every single day, are being killed or abused and it is terrible and these types of documentaries are a great way to inform the public about issues like this. It is also a great way for activists to teach the public how they can help stop the corporations and companies that sanction these dolphin massacres. This documentary is more informational than Blackfish, however, it did not reach as many people as Blackfish, and therefore, its message was not as widely

As a child, I remember pressing my face against the TV being in absolute awe when I saw a SeaWorld commercial with the infamous Shamu jumping out of the crystal clear water. Years later I look back at my foolish innocence and open my eyes to what really happens behind the closed gates of SeaWorld. Shamu and other orcas alike are put on a spectacle with lights, music, and talented trainers for the smiles and laughter of the audience and used as a ticket selling mechanism for the multibillion-dollar company. In 2013 a documentary film directed by Gabriela Cowperthwaite was released on national television on CNN; this film is known as Blackfish. Using the rhetorical components ethos, pathos, and logos Blackfish opens the gates to what really happens…

Blackfish is a film about the life of Tilikum, an orca captured at 2 years old and raised in captivity. While Tilikum lived in Seaworld he showed signs of frustration, and aggression leading to the deaths of three people. It appears his behavior stemmed from his experiences. For instance, at Sealand of the Pacific Tilikum and an older more experienced whale was placed in the same tank as Tilikum so that Tilikum would learn the tricks.…

Blackfish has shown that keeping killer whales in captivity brings danger to the whales themselves, the whales they interact with on a daily basis, and the people around them. The film uses many rhetorical techniques such as pathos, ethos, and logos, to demonstrate that it is inhumane for whales to be held in captivity. Killer whales are very human-like in terms of their brain…

    Fallacies In Blackfish

The propaganda piece Blackfish tried to turn it’s audience against the idea of whales held in captivity, yet the film was ineffective because it utilized emotional appeal, inappropriate diction, and contained many logical fallacies thus alienating those that viewed the piece. Blackfish, commissioned by CNN Films and directed by Gabriela Cowperthwaite, is a response to the, amongst other things, taking whales from the wild, separating whales from their mothers, and keeping them in a miniscule enclosures, and perhaps most recently the death of SeaWorld trainer Dawn Brancheau. What Blackfish aims to accomplish is emotionally connecting with it’s audience, more likely than not being those who do not know much about orca whales in captivity. Where…

Blackfish taps into the audience’s emotions by making you feel like the orcas have emotions themselves. For example, when they shared the story of separation of Kasatka from her daughter, Takara and the long distance distress calls she gave out. When the trainers shared all that they have been through, and the bonds they make with the orcas and then they or other trainers are attacked it is a very emotional situation. Listening to the 911 calls from Dawn’s former employee when Tilikum mutilated her was the most chilling part of the documentary. Another example is the footage of a male trainer being held under water several times and not knowing if he was going to survive.…

At the end of the article "Truth About Blackfish" it is clear that they failed to change anyone 's mind about "Blackfish". Their strategy to lie and manipulate the truth to their readers did not work. As a result Sea World has damaged its own credibility and image to their readers. It is possible that "Blackfish" is manipulative with the footage sequences. However in the argument of whether or not Killer Whales are hurt by being in captivity "Blackfish" still makes the better…

An article counteracting the renowned film, Blackfish, a documentary about the inhumane treatment and situation of orcas in captivity, was released by Seaworld Cares. SeaWorld is a multi-million dollar corporation that serves as home for 23 of arguably some of the oceans’ most beautiful creatures. Blackfish is trying to change that with a very captivating argument. Although emotionally compelling, Blackfish is an invalid argument against captivity, It offers a solution and demonstrates practicality, which makes it an argument of policy. However, it is not a valid one, for it lacks a strong and reliable foundation of evidence to support its reasoning for the solution it demands. Blackfish presents former trainers and scientific representatives who present facts about SeaWorld, as well as scientific claims that object to captivity.…

First of all, how did the snakehead fish get into the lake, well the government put them there and didn’t expect them the get out of control. I believe that snakehead fish are eating all of the fish out of lakes and people need to eat to survive. In addition, the other fish got into the snakehead jaws and the snakehead fish ate them up. So many argue them sprayed poisonous chemicals into the lake and it didn’t just kill the snakehead fish it killed all of of the fish in the lake, so the government had to put more fish back into lake the lake. For these reason i recommend not putting snakehead fish or any other harmful fish or any harmful animal that can cause damage to a person, place, or thing.…

Not only they are killed, but their meat is also sold in the Japanese market and given in schools, even though it contains high levels of mercury. If anything, it could have turned out being a film that promoted the killing of dolphins instead of promoting putting an end to the killing of dolphins. For example, the main goal of this film was to make the viewer feel sorry for all the dolphins and make them want to put an end to it. This is due to the usage of pathos. What if pathos was not used in this film? The same goes for the close up on Richard’s face while talking about the death of Kathy.…

SeaWorld has made several online statements about the inaccuracy of Blackfish. The most impressive of these statements was a 32-page document outlining many of Blackfish’s inaccuracies with cited evidence. For example, SeaWorld points out how most of the “SeaWorld trainers” interviewed in the film never worked with Tilikum, and how the film uses outdated information and footage to ignore SeaWorld’s modern facilities and protocol. News outlets still unfairly consider SeaWorld a target anyway, because Blackfish appeals to emotion while SeaWorld fights back with facts. Blackfish in news articles is often framed as if the film’s producers are underdogs stepping up against the soulless corporate entity that is SeaWorld.…
