Argumentative Essay On Beowulf

From the outside looking in, there are certain things that are not as obvious as you would think. For example, when there is a fight the only people who know the reason for the fight are the aggressors. Even then, they might not agree on the reason because of personal beliefs. In the great epic “Beowulf”, there are 3 significant fights that occur. Beowulf is always the contender and he goes against three horrific monsters. The real question is “Why?”, why would Beowulf take it amongst himself to set out and risk his life to defeat these monsters? Why did he not allow Hrothgar to fight against Grendel and his mother since it was Hrothgar’s kingdom? Were these battles just a display of Beowulf’s heroic nature, or was it much deeper than that? These questions can be answered differently depending on the critic. From personal …show more content…
Where did he come from? Though Beowulf is the center of this epic poem, hence the name, we do not know much about him or his background. As Kathryn Hume stated, “Virtually nothing else is given us; few private thoughts or personal hopes or misgivings; no characterizing features except extraordinary strength” (Hume 2). These factors complicate him more a character. Beowulf seemed a bit antisocial, he carried himself with the stature of one like a modern-day business man. He comes into Hereot on a mission. “Beowulf’s relations with other people are all public and forward; and though we infer deep feeling for Hygelac, we witness no more personal an exchange than might take place, between any commander and scout” (Hume 2). Upon his arrival he is praised and they have a great feast. During the feast someone brings up a swim race that he lost and Beowulf’s response is that he was proud to have competed in the race, regardless of the outcome. Was Beowulf’s pride one of his personal weaknesses? Was his prior loss what drove Beowulf to come to the land of the Danes to fight this monster Grendel? Hume

Beowulf stays true to his word and takes on the monster, bravely (and almost recklessly) casting aside man made objects to give Grendel a ‘fair’ fight. Beowulf also acts with honor and virtue. This characteristic is seen many times but is most notable when he fights Grendel in hand-to-hand combat; he argues that is would give him an unfair advantage against the beast and make the victory cheap and unworthy. The warrior’s code that he abides to is what makes him extend the same respect he would to any other foe to Grendel.…

“In this manner, and many times, loathsome monsters harassed me fiercely; with my fine sword I served them fittingly” (477). Beowulf says that he did lose the contest, but it was because he was killing sea monsters in the meantime. “As it was I slew nine sea beast with my sword” (492). Beowulf states that no man has the ability and the strength to swim and to kill beasts the way he does. He also exposes Unferth and says that he is not an honorable soldier that could judge other brave soldier as Beowulf, since if he was as capable and determined as he claimed, Grendel would not be attacking…

In one of the first documented creations that resulted directly of the oral tradition, storytelling is obviously important. Accordingly, to really grasp the truth in Beowulf one must examine the storytelling of the book. Beowulf, the storyteller’s storyteller, is born of Edgetho, already royalty. Yet, as a child and young man, he is criticized as being lazy, incapable, spoiled. It is my opinion that this criticism, the doubt that he was held in by his peers, is the driving force of Beowulf’s success.…

He mentions how “No king / of any neighboring clan would dare / face me with troops, none had the power / to intimidate me” (2732-2736). Even as he lay dying, he still cannot accept the fact that he may not have been as indestructible as he always believed himself to be. It sad to think that if he would have been humbler about his accomplishments, he may have been able to live a full life, but unfortunately he did not listen when someone gave him advice. Tragic Flaws Of Beowulf

The Old English epic poem “Beowulf,” written by an unknown Anglo-Saxon poet, narratres the valiant journey of a young Geatish hero named Beowulf who travels to the land of the Danes to save them from the lurid demon, Grendel. Though Beowulf’s character epitomizes the Anglo-Saxon epic hero, Beowulf also possesses three major flaws that distract modern readers from his ultimate heroism. Beowulf’s first flaw, conceitedness, is apparent in the boasts he makes upon his arrival at Herot. Though it is obvious that the Geat is a talented and mighty warrior, his actions, not his continual gloats, should illuminate his skills and brilliance. Additionally, Beowulf’s energetic and competitive nature stimulates his need for action, often causing unpleasant situations.…

In the film for example, King Hrothgar commits suicide, there is no evidence in the text supporting this. The film implies that Beowulf takes interest in the queen, while in the text there is no evidence of any romantic interest among them. This line from the film shows Beowulf’s interest, “Me It's not me he wants, my queen” (Memorable Quotes for Beowulf (2007))? The film states that Beowulf not only had an affair with Grendel’s Mother but also had a child with her. In the movie Beowulf marries the queen after Hrothgar’s death and eventually cheats on her similar to how Hrothgar did.…

Throughout the epic, Beowulf ages fifty-plus years. He goes to several battles, becomes a great warrior, establishes a name for himself, and eventually becomes king of the Geats. In order for Beowulf to establish an identity and prove to his people that he is trustworthy, he fought in a series of battles including Grendel, Grendel’s mother, and the dragon. He claims to have the strength of thirty men in one arm and often gives gifts of great measure. He proves, time and time again, that he is an exceptional warrior, as he brought and maintained peace between the Geats and the Danes, but often shows wlenco.…
