After graduating with a B.A. in psychology, he completely switched career paths by pursuing a medical degree. Carson began his neurosurgeon career by becoming a resident at Johns Hopkins University in 1977 (Biography.com Editors). He was immediately recognized for his natural talent and ingenious touches in the world of neurosurgery. By 1982, his achievements propelled him to be the chief resident of neurosurgery in his department (Biography.com Editors). An unexpected opportunity to work at Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital in Perth, Australia, came about in 1983. However, Carson returned to Johns Hopkins in 1984 and continued to grow in skill and dedication. By 1985, he became director of pediatric neurosurgery at the young age of thirty three. From 1987 to 2003, Carson became a global phenomenon as he separated several conjoined twins throughout the world. Although experience in the government would help every candidate, Carson still contains the requirements for being a leader. Being the president of the United States is more than just a number of terms spent in a political position or the amount of time one has spent in the government. A true leader requires a strong moral standing and work ethic. Far too many politicians are corrupted by the desire to remain in office. Many politicians throughout the history of the United States have sacrificed honesty and purity in order to succeed their personal goals. Ben Carson, however, refuses to give up his beliefs in order to get the vote. He even refrains from bashing the other candidates after they attack his campaign. Due to his past, Carson also contains a strong work ethic as he has overcome many struggles. Carson worked tirelessly to get to where he is today. If this young and uneducated boy was able to change his circumstances through hard work, then it is clear that he could do the same for the United States.
