There is no absolute answer for that question, but there are many different variables that scientists think affect the brain, causing autism. One example of a higher chance of having autism is when a man is getting older, near the 40’s and 50’s, his cells have undergone numerous cell divisions that are prone to error and genetic mutation (Scherer 33). Another very viable reason for why autism occurs is that there is a gene mutation that poses as a protein; it’s called the SynGAP1. This gene severely disrupts how the developing brain functions and communicates with its other primal components. This strand of genes is said to be responsible for many behavioral and cognitive problems found in the one million people affected by this gene (“What is autism?”). There are many other household objects that also show a higher risk of having an autistic child such as lead, mercury, PCB’s, organo pesticides, automobile exhaust, brominated flame retardants, non-stick chemicals and hormone-affecting chemicals (Zerbe). In the article “What is autism”, they state “If a pregnant woman gets the flu or has a fever that persists for more than one week, there is a greater chance that her offspring will be diagnosed with an ASD by the age of three.” Paul Wang states, “We know that toxic exposures during pregnancy and complications associated with delivery can disrupt brain processes before birth and shortly afterwards. …show more content…
Scientist have not found a cure for autism, but have found ways to reduce the severity of symptoms, such as a lack of the ability to express emotions. Some people spread myths about autism saying people with the disorder don’t have feelings or emotions, just because they can’t show it as well, but that’s just a result of ignorance. Each case of autism is unique, and needs a specialized treatment to reduce the symptoms (“How is Autism?”) As “How Is Autism Treated” says there is a possibility of mostly leaving the autism Spectrum Disorder behind, “...children diagnosed with autism who reach “best outcome” status. This means they have scored within normal ranges on tests for IQ, language, adaptive functioning, school placement and personality, but still have mild symptoms on some personality and diagnostic tests.” Some people need training in communication and expressing their emotions., and others might need help trying to learn something, because their brain can’t connect the information and process it as well as others. Scientists are still researching this disorder; However, they haven’t come up with more things to find the right element or compound to cure autism, yet. (Scherer
