Letting the people across Australia retain their differences through their use of Australian English would be vital in preventing the loss of identity. Language can be used as a form of expression of identity as it lets people emit a certain image. It is a distinguishing mark of themselves and what makes them unique amongst other groups of people (Dalla-Riva, 2015). Language then reflects one’s life - their lifestyle, what surrounds them, and more. Letting the people of each different state and territory use their own language and slang is an important aspect to celebrating Australian English, as it emphasizes Australia’s differences in language and identity throughout the country. By not letting people use their choice of Australian English, this will cause everyone to be similar, and people can no longer express themselves and showcase their individuality. Not only that, it will be impossible to monitor how each person speaks and the words each person uses. The different words and slang in Australian English today also is reflective of Australian history. But whether one calls it a drink tap or a drinking fountain, or if they call it an icy pole or an ice block, one thing is for certain - they are all Australian, and despite all their differences in identity, and language, there is nothing that can change
