Australia Day celebrates the invasion of the First Fleet at Sydney Cove in 1788. Land was stolen from the indigenous and its inhabitants were forcefully colonized and should be changed to another date. Due to what it commemorates and reminds many of the heinous acts that were committed via the European colonists, the date should be relocated. An Indigenous man, Warrick Wright claims that the Aboriginals feel that Australians are “pretty much celebrating invasion, and killing our mob off.” Aboriginals and Torres Strait Islanders have been voicing their disapproval of the celebratory date since the 1800s. Australia is mature enough to listen to these complaints and act in respect for its national custodians. Australia should not celebrate its nationhood on this particular day, and should be moved to another date.
Australia Day should be moved due to the increasingly large amount of the population celebrating on a day, which should instead be used for mourning. Although many of our indigenous custodians were slaughtered from the 26th of January onward, copious amounts celebrate only to journey to the beach and consume alcohol with friends. The population has forgotten the meaning of Australia Day, and celebrates in the incorrect way, all the more reason to move this day to another.
Australia Day is positively insensitive and disrespectful regarding to the way the country celebrates its acts of the past. Its date should be relocated so the Australian population is not celebrating a day of slaughter and
