Argumentative Essay On Animal Intelligence

Decent Essays
The question of animal intelligence has been hotly debated among scientists in the past. While we would like to believe that we are the only intelligent species on Earth, there is ample evidence that vertebrate animals often behave in ways that could easily be considered "intelligent". Read the following link entitled "Bird Brains" and comment on the idea of animal intelligence. What do you think of the evidence presented in the article? Is it enough to convince you? What kinds of behavior could suggest intelligence in an animal? Finally, why do you think accepting the idea of intelligence in other animals is so difficult for us?

I think the evidence in this article clearly shows how birds are similar to humans. They have their own language

here is a central warning that runs throughout Steven Jay Gould's Book, The Mismeasure of Man. Gould alerts the reader to his concerns about the objectivity of science and the role that the scientist has in the corroboration of empirical findings for his or her theory or research program. Gould argues that the science underlying the hereditarian school of intelligence is flawed in that the research and findings are result of a priori convictions of the researchers, not of objective inquir y into the nature of human intelligence. Accompanying the prime fallacy of a priori science are the additional errors of reification, which leads to circular reasoning, and mismatched logic that hereditarians employ while arguing their theories. ] Do you think animals are intelligent? Using the two articles “Animal Snoops” and “How smart are animals” I can infer that animals are intelligent. I think this because in the article “Animal Snoops”, it says that animals eavesdrop on their prey so they can get their food. I also think that animals are intelligent because in the article “How smart are animals” it says that they can learn to solve a problem using motions in front of them. That's two things that support my statement that animals are very intelligent.…

To determine the answer, they exposed an object to both a human and a monkey and observed whether or not they understood object permanence after the object was hidden. The investigators reached a surprising conclusion when the monkey understood object permanence, but the toddler did not. They concluded that at younger ages, monkeys are more intelligent than humans. This evidence is not sufficient because as Shubin stated, intelligence is a broad spectrum that cannot be determined by one specific…

The type of genius the authors are referring to is the intellect animals possess, which is related to their survival. They mention the dodo bird as an example of an animal incapable of adapting to a changing environment, spurred on by the introduction of humans. However, dogs were able to change their behaviors in order to vastly increase their success in species wide survival, as they adapted in relation to humans. Therefore, the type of genius the authors describe is one of adaptability and survival. However, the authors later mention that there are two specific aspects to genius in all animals including dogs, a mental skill that is strong compared with others, either within your own species or in closely related species and the ability…

Introduction Definitions of intelligence vary among scholars, theorists, and laypersons, due to its multidimensionality. However, intelligence typically involves an individual’s ability to learn from experience and adapt to the environment in which they live. I believe that the construct of intelligence should encompass an individual’s ability to effectively communicate in both written and verbal form, to think logically, and to express creativity. Two intelligence tests in which I recently had the opportunity to take and score included the Shipley Institute of Living Scale-2 and the Wonderlic Personnel Test.…

Rather than twisting off a cap of a prescription bottle and downing a pill or two with a swig of water, a rather unique form of treatment for mental illnesses is the use of emotional support animals (ESA for short). Contrary to service animals, an emotional support animal is not trained for a specific task other than providing comfort to someone suffering from a mental illness. ESAs have no restrictions on the breed or species of animal and can range from dogs to cats and even reptiles. Emotional support animals are normally the person’s pet before they are registered and therefore are hard to distinguish from other pets. While there is some controversy for the use of emotional support animals, consistent results from research and studies suggests…
