Sitting in the courtroom with Jerry, Marlene kept thinking she would be going home with her husband, I’m sure they’ll find me innocent. Within hours, the jurors asked a question. Once they got the answer, they returned to the deliberating room.
After five days of deliberation, the foreman notified the bailiff they had reached a decision. “Ladies and gentlemen, have you reached a verdict?” Judge Hunter asked when everyone returned to the courtroom.
Standing to his feet, the foreman said, “Yes, we have.”
“Would you give the decision to the bailiff?” Handing the paper to the bailiff, who gave it to Judge Hunter. After looking at the verdict, he returned the paper to the foreman.
“Marlene Barnes, stand with your attorney.” Judge Hunter said.

On May 14, Jerry and his parents wanted to learn Marlene’s fate. When they arrived at the courtroom, they found the court already in session and sat in the back row. “Is there any victim impact statements?” Judge Hunter asked.
“Thank you, your honor, there are none,” Michelle said.
“Marlene Barnes, when I looked at this case, and wondered if circumstantial evidence was a good defense. However, as I’ve listened to the evidence presented in court. I’ve changed my mind and now believe you’re a cold hard killer with no conscious. According to the evidence, you committed a most heinous senseless murder by smashing her head with a statue. The court sentences you to die in the death chamber at the State Prison. Get her out of here,” the judge said as the deputy led Marlene led her out of the courtroom sobbing.
