There are a lot of books banned from the United States ( over 300 to be exact), but no one knows how many times a certain book or book have been challenged against the American Library Association. 11,300 times a certain book has been challenged and those challenged books were soon censored and banned. Censorship is any prohibition of any book that seems inappropriate or promote violence or a threat to children of age. So books have been banned that contain anything that could provoke their child into doing wrong. Parents really believe that their child will copy what a bad character does in a book and react it in real life . The ALA shouldn’t ban books if someone wants to express how different they are or their personal freedom, people should be able to read whatever book they decide to read, but instead ignorance is created because people nowadays like to judge others.Censorship is uncalled for kids get curious and wants to know what’s going on the other side of the world . …show more content…

The banning and challenging of a book is typically decided by parents, school staff, and district officials. For a book to be challenged it has to be attempted to be removed or restricted. It is, again, based upon the objections or parents and school officials. Unlike a challenge a banning of a book is the removal of material that is getting challenged. Most of the time challenges and banning’s are motivated by the desire to protect the children from what people think may be inappropriate content, typically sexual or against a religion or sometimes because it promotes a certain religion.…

These reasons can vary, but one of the main reasons books are banned is because “Censors are often targeting the latest social issues”(Scales). Many books are banned because they represent a current controversial or heated topic.. Take for example the book Daddy's Roommate, a children's book that focuses around a child whose father divorces his wife and then lives with another man. They participate in family activities and act as any other couple would. This book has come under fire from many fronts because it features homosexual relations between two men.…

Although there are books banned, there is a time where teachers can talk about some of the books to their students. This is called Banned Book Week. This is a week to celebrate the amazing literature students miss out on. A book may contain horrid and offensive writing but it doesnt mean its not a great piece of literature and that people can not read it. Connie Bennett says, “ We use banned book week as an opportunity to celebrate freedom of expression”(Source 4).…

Often times parents will challenge a book for its language and the violence present in the book, because they want to keep their child innocent and protected from the wrongs of the world. While it is a understandable concern, it is ridiculous considering what the average high schooler sees and hears in the halls of their school on a daily basis. Parents like this wanted to ban A…

There are the main things such as being sexually explicit, having vulgar language, or not being suited for that age group. Then there are others that are banned for the talk of the extraterrestrial and witchcraft. In the many years people have been challenging books, many have made it to court such as Minarcini v. Strongsville City School District, Mozert v. Hawkins County Board of Education, and one of the most famous, Board of Education v. Pico. All of these cases were brought up because someone had a problem with the writing of a novel. Pico was mainly brought up for religious reasons against books such as Go Ask Alice by Beatrice Sparks and Down These Mean Streets by Piri Thomas.…

In a few areas a great book, To Kill a Mockingbird, and many books like it are being banned. To Kill a Mockingbird is a very informative book on what life was like in the 1930’s, but it is still being banned for strong language, “strong content”, and strong cases of racism. Many schools have had kids read that book, but because of recent events a few have started to ban it. Some people believe that they can teach messages like the ones taught from this book, but in a better way, so they make it more suitable for kids to read. Some citizens feel that kids should be introduced to strong topics like this when they are in around 8th grade, which is a very common time for schools to have children/teens to read this novel in school, because kids need to be prepared for the real world early on.…

This is usually done to protect others- mostly children- from reading difficult ideas and information. Sex, racism, religion and language are the main reasons why books are banned. Banned Books Week states that “Many books have been banned or censored in one or more of these categories due to a misjudgment or misunderstanding about the book's contents and message.” People are looking past the true meaning and, instead, are misunderstanding that these books are teaching people a lot more than just racism, sex, religion and language. Which can also lead to people banning books that they haven’t even read.…

Another reason books are banned is because they might contain racial themes. And also because of religion motives. There was never a real start to banning books, people were always trying to get rid of “harmful books”, and up until the invention of the printing press in 1450, the only thing you needed to do to ban a book was burn it. For a book to be banned, it has to first be challenged and then proven unfit for what kind of person would be reading it. The reasons for ban include sexual situations or dialog, profanity, encouragement of "damaging" lifestyles, violence or negativity, racial issues, books that include magic or witchcraft themes, such as Harry Potter, religious affiliations, and political bias. Parents argue that they know their children better and that their child’s education follows the parent’s choices, which is true, but that doesn’t mean that you should be banning books for no reason.…

Teachers avoid the questionable material to avoid conflict, and students suffer only learning “safe” material labeled by the censors. Even more often, textbook publishers remove or edit material to increase sales and to avoid being censored. All of the following books have been subject to banning based on racism, sexual references, religion, and witchcraft: To Kill a Mockingbird, Animal Farm, Huckleberry Finn, The Scarlet Letter, The Catcher in the Rye, Harry Potter, and many others.…

Books should not be banned because they do not fit with one person or groups affiliations. This will lead to communist like society, where thoughts are controlled, so that nothing can be challenged or improved. Topics found in banned books defy societal norms and can instill within their readers eye opening revelations. These revelations are what lead to the great thinkers, the revolutions, and the events that shape history. Ultimately, it is the books on the banned list that carry the deepest significance, so they be encouraged to taught in schools to the young generations, who will one day lead this country, not banished from the desks of classrooms and shelves of libraries.…

Fortunately, for every group pushing for bans on literature, there are organizations that fight for this freedom. One such organization is the American Civil Liberties Union. In the year 2000, when discussing the topic of book banning, the organization stated that, “Permitting restraints on literature sets the stage for attacks on all expression that is artistically or politically controversial or that portrays unpleasant realities of life” (American Civil Liberties Union). Although some books may contain graphic violence or sexual content, and therefore of course should be kept out of the hands of children, I’d like to think that these widespread en masse bans of such literature are a poor way to go about it. It’s not as if middle or high school students are incapable of understanding and comprehending dark or more adult subject matter.…

Relating to the First Amendment of the United States’ Constitution, every American individual has the freedom to express themselves to any circumstance they see fit. Despite what the Constitution states, several schools throughout the United States have put a halt to the freedom of choice, freedom of expression, and the ending of a child’s suffering. There are hundreds to thousands of books of different genres that have been banned from public and private schools in America. Children and teenagers do not get to choose whether or not they would like to read a certain book because their teachers believe it may be a “bad influence” on their mind. (“Schools and Censorship” 1).…
