Argumentative Essay

Obesity in the U.S. is high and on the rise. Some kids just don't want to exercise, and need encouragement. Others want to exercise, but don't get the chance. Physical Education (PE) should be required in high schools because of this. It would give kids a chance to get fit. The main reasons PE should be required throughout high school is: because exercise is good and provides many health benefits, it can help in other subjects, and lastly, PE provides a break from traditional “learning” classes, while still promoting beneficial effects for a student.

There are many health benefits of PE. It exposes students to new activities that they might not have tried otherwise. By trying new activities, it helps kids get stronger and gain better endurance while having fun. One third of kids in the U.S. are overweight, which can lead to type two diabetes or obesity. Physical activity helps lower these risks. PE can help the foundation of self discipline and good life long habits of keeping active.

People that might disagree might say it takes away learning time, but without PE, it would be harder to teach kids important things. The increase in attention spans correlates with increased test scores and overall academic performance. Studies have shown that walking for even 20 minutes improves memory. More vigorous activity, which can be found in PE classes, produces a sharper brain, which is even more ready to learn.

The final reason PE should be required in high school is PE gives you a break from traditional “learning” classes like math or english and lets you run around. Additional benefits of PE include:
Teaching self discipline
Development of student responsibility for health and fitness
Influencing leadership, and cooperation with others
Providing a means to release tension and anxiety

It is true that modern children don’t always get enough exercise, yet competitive sports shouldn’t be the only way children get healthy. As some kids are being over pressured with sports, others have little to no physical activities. Competitive sports leave out those kids and don’t bring any benefit to them at all. Illinois is the only state that requires mandatory PE in public schools (Spurlock, Documentary). Although some schools have gym every week or so, the amount of exercise the children get is usually not enough.…

In addition, the article, “How Finland Keeps Kids Focused Through Free Play” by Timothy D. Walker, states, “During these times [recess], they not only rest and recharge—they also learn to cooperate, communicate, and compromise, all skills they need to succeed academically as well as in life.” These social skills learned during recess are important because they can only be learned through free play, not structured activities. To illustrate, the article, “Middle School Recess”, states, “Many social graces are learned on the playground. While Physical Education classes provide a sequential and developmental instructional program for physical fitness, recess allows children to play, make up rules and have choices.” Therefore, despite the fact that Physical Education classes provide similar health benefits as recess, PE is not a true replacement for recess because other social skills can only be learned during unstructured play time, not scheduled exercise.…

Without it, a child could become obese due to lack of physical activity. In the Sports Participation article, it states that "sports participation can positively impact academic achievement for high school students. " I agree with this statement and believe that it helps with younger students as well. According to research in the article Organized Sports and the Health of Children and Youth, it is found that participating in an organized sport "can reduce fatness, strengthen bones and help maintain a healthy heart and circulatory system" (Rosewater, 2010, p.1). The serious injuries that children may be sustaining from sports before they are physically ready, I feel, is due to the pressure and seriousness of the parents and coaches.…

Obesity refers to a state in which an individual has accumulated excess fats in his or her body tissues to the extent that it might impose adverse health effects to him or her. The Center for Disease Control and Prevention use the body mass index (BMI) to determine a snapshot view of obesity in America. The BMI uses a sliding scale of height and weight to estimate whether an individual may be obese or not. This method isn’t completely accurate because it does not adequately assess individual body fat percentages but it is the most expedient and cost effective means of determining potential obesity.…

Physical Education in High School With the rise of the technological age, it seems like the only thing that is not improving is the world’s health. Everyday, children face social pressures, academic stressors, and distractions in the form of electronics and social media outlets. Couple the previous statement with the fact that school systems across the country are placing less of an importance on physical activity, and it should be no surprise that 1 out of every 3 children ages 2-19 are overweight, or at risk of becoming overweight (CDC). Physical education should be required in all four years of high school because it promotes a healthy lifestyle, builds skills essential all throughout ones life, and provides an outlet for releasing tension…
