For those that enjoy music but do not sing or play an instrument themselves, Luke Carlson, assistant professor of music, said there are a variety of concerts and performances every semester they can attend.
“Some of the audience members we get are family members,” Carlson said, “but we also have students, faculty members, and outside visiting people. You never know who's going to come to a concert, so it's just the sort of wonderful experience where we are all sharing music.”

“Our orchestra and bands have community members, people that are retired that live in the area come and play with us, we have high school students that play with us, we have music majors, we have music minors, and we have non-music majors playing,” Carlson said. “We actually have some faculty members that take lessons in instruments. So really there's nobody that's excluded.”
Currently, Carlson said the music department is in desperate need of string players.
“Violinist, violist, cello, and double bass, they are really needed,” Carlson said, “and it's a huge priority for us.”
Even if someone is not yet proficient enough to join a group, Carlson said the music department wants to be a resource for them.
“We want you to come and talk to us and say ‘hey, I am not really good yet, but I want to be,’” Carlson said. “We'll help you.”
