Other than physical treatments, there are also alternatives including mind-body therapies. This may sound unique, but is indeed a very efficient way to forget about the suffering and pain that comes with HIV. Meditation, visualization & affirmations, humor, and inspirational audiotapes are a few ways that this therapy can be used. They use the mind to help reduce stress and may help side effects if one takes prescription drugs. As the UCLA Newsroom states, mindful meditation opens a “receptive awareness of the present moment to experiences, avoiding thinking of the past or worrying about the future”. As mentioned above, the HIV-positive people feel as they don’t have any control over their lives, and affirmations may give them the control over it. To add on, these may be read aloud, listened to or memorized to boost health and self-esteem (“A Practical Guide to Complementary Therapies”). Affirmations are a calm way to regain confidence and control in one’s life, because it allows them to think of good things about themselves and memorize it, making them remember who and what they are. Humor and inspirational audiotapes, also known as audio hypnosis, are also another way to help forget something. This is played when one is resting, relaxed, or half-conscious.
