After reaching this goal, an individual is more likely to thrive and strive to do better. Renowned Psychologist Carol Dweck, states hard work is what gets the job done. Hard work teaches students to love what they are learning and teaches them the value of persistence. It shows a perfect score does not automatically guarantee the priority path in life. Valuing the concepts of accepting the way one learns and demonstrating the tenacity to reach a certain goal, not only improves one’s intellect but also their character. For example, a person not born with natural ability of math and science still can reach the level as a naturally scientific individual. One is not only gaining knowledge and expanding their intellect, they are also learning about what it means to have tenacity and determination and use hard work as well as perseverance to reach their goals. “It is much wiser, Dweck says, to praise children for work and persistence. People nearly always perform better if they focus on things they can control, such as their effort, rather than things they cannot” (Glenn). When one is in control of their effort, they are often more interested in the subject. Having an understanding that effort is what creates success leads to a positive mindset and achievement in an area of interest. Often this enthusiasm for learning is contagious and can be passed on to others who may be struggling with a subject. Having the enthusiasm and ability to relate to others students are several other qualities that are gained along with intellect. Gaining these qualities alone can promote one farther than just their intelligence. For instance, if a student accomplishes the goal of graduating with a engineering degree, they go on to become a professor who teaches this subject and they have reached this point without using tenacity and determination, it makes for a very dull class with little chance for the professor to relate to the students in the class.
