In 2010, President Barack Obama said in his State of the Union Address, “[I]n the United States of America, no one should go broke because they chose to go to college” (“Notable Quotes”). But unfortunately in today’s world, many students graduate college with a good deal of debt. This is a problem, and the recent presidential election has caused more in-depth debate about this issue. Many people believe that college should be free, but there are also those who believe it is something that should be paid for in full by the student. With college tuition prices on the rise, and in the declining state of the economy, many people do not realize how hard it is for poor and middle class students to graduate with little or no loans.…

Going to school in America is not cheap. Everyday students struggle not only to pay for their collegiate educations, but also to offset these costs as much as they can. One issue many have raised is the fact that colleges and universities are simply too expensive, most families can not afford to pay out of pocket the tens of thousands of dollars a year for an education. The government does attempt to help through FAFSA, giving subsidized and unsubsidized loans geared towards assisting students through their studies and deferring payments until 6 months after graduation. My family and I are extremely thankful that we qualify for these loans and have chosen only to take out what we need and nothing more, this way when the time comes to pay them…

(Owen and Sawhill 216) With the cost of college averaging about $102,000 in and these people being projected to make less than half of that a year, to tell these folks that college should be their path is to lead them to the road of financial burden. People in these programs of study would have a higher lifetime return on investment (also known as ROI) with their education, if they went to highschool, and then enrolled in local community/statewide programs in those same fields to attain their goals. Throughout my life, I have never even considered not going to college, as my parents both went to college and have urged me to go to college as well. Currently, it seems as though less and less people agree about the value of a college education, and many aren’t going to college. Despite the fact that some people argue that college isn’t worth the investment and the risk of losing that money with college debts and not making enough to replace it, I believe that college is indeed worth the investment when you consider how much more college graduates make than those who don’t go to college, as well as the social benefits you gain from the college experience. College is definitely worth the cost and risk of attending a college. According to the BLS, “Workers with a bachelor’s degree, for example, earn about $415…
