Should the penny be kept, or should it be thrown away and never used again? People have argued for years, whether the penny should be kept or not. The penny should be thrown out for many reasons, like cost and it doesn't really matter all that much. First off, the penny costs too much and it isn't worth it. The penny costs too much to make, at 2.41 cents to make(Sommer). Each penny got only is worth 1 cent, so you would be losing 1.41 cents to make a single penny. Also, in 2011 taxpayers lost 60.2 million to make pennies(Sommer). That amount is too much to make pennies. Taxpayers also lost 19.8 million in 2009, and 27.4 million in 2010(Sommer). For example, the military don't use pennies overseas because they aren't cost effective to ship because they are worth so little(Mancused). The military dropped the coin without consequences and so could the U.S. Also, Pennies aren't worth much by themselves, so people wouldn't mind giving them up(Waterhouse). Most people don't even use pennies anymore. .People also throw most of their pennies in fountains and in their dresser drawers(Sommer). So the money that it takes to make pennies are wasted.
