Argumentative Essay: John's Not Guilty

Improved Essays
Today, in this courtroom John will be found not guilty. The answer is right in front of our faces and to continue this argument would not only waste Mr. and Mrs. Smith’s time, but it also would be wasting the judge and juries time. This particular case should not be looked at as more important that any other case with a similar situation. John did what was right and what was necessary. “Mere ebullitions of passion, impulsive violence, and temporary pain, affection will soon forget and forgive, and each member will find excuse for the other in his own frailties.” (State v. Black, Pg. 14) Eventually, not only will Jane forgive John but she will also realize that he did this because he cares about her, not because he was trying to hurt her. This

Nils Christie wrote “Conflicts as Property” arguing the importance of conflicts in society and how they have become property that can be used and stolen. In this critical summary I will summarize and then critically analyze his work to determine if I agree with his argument. Christie opens the paper by arguing the importance of conflicts in our society and that “they ought to be used, and become useful, for those originally involved in the conflict.” He continues by describing how conflicts are taken from the victim, who “is so thoroughly represented that she or he of most of the proceedings is pushed completely out of the arena, reduced to the triggerer-off of the whole thing.” The author also denounces courts and lawyers that, he believes, are trained to steal, prevent, and solve conflicts.…

Conclusion After reviewing all the theories of justice in the Pham murder case, the best theory to bring to this crime is the parallel theory. The parallel theory of justice is the best model compared to other models because it allows representation for both the victim and the offender. The parallel theory in this case allows the victims proper help and the offender’s proper punishment. The utilitarian and retributive theories only focus on the offender, with a young girl deceased acknowledging the victims of the crime is important. The restorative theory of justice does also focus on the offender and the victim but it has limitations when it comes to programs that help victims recover.…

Arthur Miller’s play, The Crucible, expressed many different characters with dissimilar intentions and motivations in great length. These dramatic emotions tied along with greed and desire allowed this playwright to come to life and create an overall exhilarating read for the audience. Most characters in this play have important roles that demonstrate their true incentive in what they will get out of this huge mess of hysteria. The character of Abigail is very interesting to touch upon.…

Guilty Until Proven Innocent Prison has been around in human society for many millions of years. Having someone who disobeyed the law of that village, town, city or country punished in some form of institution, cutting them off from people, is a common concept. When someone has been accused of a crime the police find evidence to back up the story and he/she is proven guilty, but when someone is falsely accused of rape and there is hardly any evidence to back up the claim they are still looked at as a guilty sexual offender. A false accusation of sexual abuse occurs more often than most people would expect. Reasons for false accusations are mostly intentional and otherwise erroneous.…

Criminal victimization can be defined by the effects associated with becoming a victim of a crime; anyone can be victimized, including the strong, weak, or even the infirm. It’s the circumstances that dictates the probability of being victimized, from forgetting to lock your house doors, to walking down a dark city street at three o’clock in the morning. However, when an ordinary person transforms into a victim, they begin to question the moral code of humanity, and their rational decision making skills. Ultimately, it’s up to the criminal justice system “…to empower crime victims…” and provide them support in a time of personal crisis (Jarell and Ozymy 1). Victimization does not stop after a criminal offense has been prosecuted, it continues in the form of emotional distress, physical…
