Regardless of any opinion one may have on the issue, screen time is greatly surpassing time spent outside by children. I remember being a child and being outdoors from the time I woke up until I went to bed; unlike my nine-year-old brother who is outside playing with friends and family no more than once a week. The question we must ask ourselves being: "Is this moving our children in a positive direction, or are we doing more harm than good by allowing this?" Some would say this is fine and that other factors like weather or supervision could lead to today's children not being outside playing. While those are factors in how a child spends their day, I don't believe they are strong enough factors to

Play is part of children's nature, especially playing outside. "We’re not talking about structured play. We’re talking about free unstructured play out of doors." Seslija(2014) explains, which is a counselor for Health and Physical Education in the UK.Outside precisely is the “boundaries” of children,it should be a simple and carefree place(Seslija,2014).However,there is a growing body of evidence, according to Cheryl(2009),that demonstrates children’s experiences to nature have changed significantly in childhood in the past few decades. In addition,“there are strong indicators of an absence of direct experience with the natural world in many children’s everyday lives. ”(Charles,2009)However,as Seslija(2014)argues,it is difficult to see a child plays outside anymore in some suburban areas,“It's a desert.…

"Between 2011 and 2013,children ages 8 and under more than doubled thier use of media devices with screens". This increase of the use of media devices has parents and sientists disagreeing on whether or not its suitable for children to use media devices for an extended amout of time. Parents who belive that there is a corralation between the amount of screen time a child has and the negative responses they can have would argue that children should be "limited to 1-2 hours per day and younger children have no screen time at all'. Backing up thier arguments with reasearch that suggests that "depression","obesity",and "lower executive functions are…

America can be called the melting pot but can also be called the most obese country on the planet. In recent years there has been a rise in obesity, especially in youth. The reason might be because children don’t do much physical activity, like playing outside. Children also eat more fast-food due to the fact that most parents work and don’t have time to make healthy meals at home. From health conditions to plenty of temptations out there, it is difficult for a person to stay thin and meet the expectations of society.…

Hungry for Change Why is it that law mandates public school meals have a minimum calorie intake, but not a maximum? This owes itself to the fact that when nutrition standards were established for public schools, it was to solve the problem of undernourishment. The majority of school aged children used to walk to school, played more outside, and were more active in sports. This resulted in children burning more calories than school meals provided.…

“Doing Nothing is Something” by Anna Quindlen talks about how when people are doing nothing they are actually said to be doing their best work. First off, nobody ever has time where they have absolutely nothing to do. Everybody always has things to do they just might not want to do them. So, they ignore them until they either decide to do it themselves or they have no choice. If kids had more time to do nothing it would be really helpful because no kid can just sit and do nothing.…

(2011) compared the occurrence and frequency of types of play in two metropolitan Sydney early childcare centres, one featuring natural outdoor elements and the other with a synthetic environment, to determine which offered the greater volume and opportunity for cognitive function. Through observation and data collection it was found that the natural outdoor space delivered significantly more potential for children’s learning as the natural world “provides a richer environment for learning and influences children’s opportunities for social interactions and nature play” (Dowdell et al., 2011). The children in a natural play space also maintained participation in activities for greater periods of time which allowed for richer and deeper learning and demonstrated the unlimited potential of nature to be a place where “there is always something new for children to discover” (Davis, 2010), whereas the synthetic play space showed a high number of children engaging in high risk behaviours. Although this study was small and objective, it the natural environment was found to give the children opportunities to enriched learning possibilities by providing them with a greater variety of elements for exploration and investigation and a place where children could contribute and make a mark on the…

Screen time addiction, or screen obsession, is a vexed subject as the majority of parents and society view it as a problem, while rest feel that it is not a huge concern. Some feel the need for people to crack down on screen addiction because they compare the U.S to countries like South Korea or China where there already is an epidemic on screen usage. Also, screen time doesn’t just cover the internet, but much more, ranging from phone usage to video games, and just about anything that allows teens to be glued to a screen. Nearly all teens in the U.S own a smartphone, which is one of the biggest enablers of screen addiction. And even though the generations before us have lived glued to the TV, people still can’t let go that today’s technology…

At some point in all our lives, we have pondered the possibility that technology is bound to take over and be the death of us. While there are a couple of special snowflakes who pride themselves of not having anything to do with technology, the rest of us are consumed by it. What makes technology so beautiful is that it makes it hard to come to the conclusion as to whether we are incredibly lazy people for shamelessly basking in its conveniences or the smartest human beings because of our ability to catch on to seemingly endless updates and upgrades. Knowledge may be power, but where does the knowledge actually come from and who really has the power when it comes to people and technology? From simple technologies such as the abacus that was invented in Babylonia in 2400 BC to the digital satellite radio in 2001, everything in between is just as significant as to how far technology has come.…

Many parents believe that their child should spend as much time as they want to on their electronic devices. There are other parents that believe that their child should have timed hours. I will be giving a few reasons why parents should limit the time their child spends on their electronic devices. The first reason why parents should limit their children's screen time is because if their child spends too much time on their devices, it is possible that this could interfere with the child's physical fitness along with many other things.…

There are various effective arguments I would make to support students having homework by their teachers. The first argument I would make is that homework helps students to better retain the lessons they’ve learned during the school day. Students need a lot of exercises to do to retain what they learn everyday in school. Since class time isn’t enough to provide a lot of exercises on one subject, homework is the best way to exercise what’s been learned in class. If no homework is given to students on a subject that’s been discussed in class, it’s more likely for them to forget the subject the next day.…
