Argumentative Essay: Is It Worth The Penny?

Ever tossed a penny aside and never gave a second thought about its worth? What many Americans fail to realize is the price they pay for each discarded, unwanted penny. I believe that the penny should be eliminated from American currency because they cost too much, waste valuable work time, and have been erased in other countries with no terrible consequences. The penny is surely not worth the trouble it causes and the burdens we have to endure by keeping them. Pennies are worth one cent, but producing pennies can cost even more than double that price. At a point in America’s history, the production and distribution cost 2.41 cents (Sommer). Many will state that the penny is just not worth the harm it induces. From an economical view, it is regarded as a waste of money, and for good reason (Sommer). Inflation is a concern to many citizens, the idea of businesses rounding up when they have to change the price of their products (Sommer). However, they fail to understand that the time and money businesses spend counting pennies is a worse threat to our economy (Mancuso). Another argument claims finding a way to make the production of pennies cost less is a more appropriate solution. Given how long the penny and this issue have existed, it seems that idea is unrealistic. Many people believe that pennies do add up in the end, due to Penny Drives and certain studies showing that with enough effort, pennies can earn value. They seem to be oblivious to the fact that making the pennies cost the producers double what they earned, and there is no way around that.
