Argumentative Essay: Is Columbus A Villain?

Many people disagree with each other in many ways. For example, one person wants to eat at home while the other wants to eat out. However, those are easy fixes and they will certainly come to an agreement. On the other hand, there is a much greater debate. Should Columbus Day be abolished as a National holiday? To abolish something means to get rid of or to put an end to. Do people believe in Columbus’ heroic actions, or do they believe in Columbus’ failure and genocide? It seems as if many people disagree and believe Columbus is a villain. In fact, some cities and states have eliminated Columbus Day and have changed its title. Many Native American protestors have been demonstrating against Columbus in Seattle for several years. Protest organizers say, “Columbus should not be credited with …show more content…
Zinn does a very good job about attacking the reader from a Native American’s perspective. Zinn uses quotes from Columbus’ own journal and describes to the reader what it was like back then. He quotes, “As soon as I arrived in the Indies, on the first Island which I found, I took some of the natives by force in order that they might learn and might give me information of whatever there is in these parts.” It is obvious that Columbus must have treated them very badly in order to get what he wanted which we all know was gold. “..They ordered all persons fourteen years or older to collect a certain quantity of gold every three months. When they brought it, they were given copper tokens to hang around their necks. Indians found without a copper token had their hand cut off and bled to death.” (Howard Zinn) Columbus commits genocide and violence by torturing the Natives because they weren’t able to complete impossible tasks. These are just some of the many reason why I agree with many people in Settle that Columbus Day should be

The general argument made by Silvio Laccetti and the Los Angeles Times Editorial Board in their work, Pro/Con: Should we Celebrate Christopher Columbus , is whether or not we should continue to celebrate Columbus Day. Silvio Laccetti claims that we should still celebrate Columbus Day. He writes, “He was also a great explorer, an intrepid adventurer, a man of fervent faith and a defiant leader who blazed a path to the modern world” (para 9). In this passage, Laccetti is suggesting that Columbus was a brave explorer who overcame adversity and started the Age of Exploration. The Los Angeles Times Editorial Board claims that we need to recognize the suffering of indigenous, American people.…

Did you know Columbus Day is a lie? If you don’t know who Columbus is, he was a man who was claimed to discover America. Many think that Columbus found the New World looking for new undiscovered land but he was in fact trying to find gold and an all-water route to Asia as well as Queen Isabella’s mission for spreading Christianity to Asia. Columbus Day shouldn’t be celebrated because he was not actually the person to discover the Americas and Columbus thought he landed in Asia. First, Columbus Day shouldn’t be celebrated because Columbus thought he landed in India and didn’t think he discovered new territory.…

HOTA Summer Assignment Chapter one: Analysis: Zinn thouroughly believes that Columbus is an awful person and portrays him to be so when explaining how he would cut the hands off of the Indians who did not bring him enough gold or if they ran away he would track them down and kill them. Even though it was almost impossible to find the amount of gold that Columbus was asking for from each person. But, Zinn does not believe that Columbus was the only horrid explorer, he also states that Cortes treated the Aztec similarly, and Pizzaro to the Incas, and the English settlers of Virginia and Massachusetts to the Powhatans and the Pequots. Zinn basically states how almost all European settlers in North America treated Native Americans in the same way, committing “genocide” to claim what they saw as their destiny.…

Columbus did lots of horrifying things to a mass of people; both to the europeans and the natives, yet some people get a day off to celebrate his “achievements.” For example, Columbus selfishly mistreated the natives by being a “greedy imperialist who slaughtered and spread disease among the indigenous people and institutionalized the slave trade.” However, John Sebastiano, president of UNICO believes Columbus “globalized our world.” One can argue, Columbus did do horrible things and that the bad out ways the good because what he did was not acceptable at all. He watched out for himself only and did not care if he was hurting a human population.…

Columbus day should not be celebrated as a holiday because Columbus tortured and killed many native Americans while on his voyage, he was not the first to find the land he discovered, and he never set foot in what is known today as the United States of America. Christopher Columbus is thought to be the founder of the U.S. and the first man to step foot on the land. He is also praised for the discoverment of the New World which consisted of him finding various Caribbean islands, the Gulf of Mexico, and the South and Central American mainlands. Columbus and his journeys were the beginning stepping stones for the long process that eventually produced the United States of America(Textbook 48). Columbus’s discovery was in great magnitude because it was greater than any other discoveries at that time and other discoveries stemmed from it (Textbook 48).…

Columbus Day should be changed to Indigenous Culture’s Day because we should not celebrate a genocide of an entire culture. It does not matter how “great” and “influential” he was, he wiped out an entire people. In 1451, Christopher Columbus (known in Italy as Cristoforo Colombo) was born in Genoa, Italy. He was born in a nice middle class family, whose father was a wool weaver. He was a normal man, until he started voyaging to Africa and the “New World”.…

Every October in the United States, a holiday is observed by schoolchildren and working adults to commemorate the accomplishments of the great Christopher Columbus. While this break from school and work is appreciated by all, there is controversy surrounding the holiday itself. This debate stems from misinterpretations of the origin of Columbus Day and whether it really concerns Columbus himself. Due to its name, this holiday is taught to children by portraying Columbus as a hero and the founder of the Americas, but this is not the truth. Columbus Day should be abolished in the United States due to the misunderstandings of Columbus’s accomplishments, the devastating consequences experienced by the Taino people on San Salvador, and the repercussions…

In the chapter ‘Forget Columbus’ of the book ‘The Inconvenient Indian’, the author Thomas King writes about his point of view on the forgotten history of the Native Americans. He conveys about the tales made up about the natives and americans engraved in the history to mainly appeal to the white audience. The author starts the chapter by telling how insignificant was the discovery of the land of natives made by Columbus. According to him the only reason why he was given credit and recognized because his story as Columbus sailing the oceans, travelling across with interesting adventures and going through hardships with a letter to the Emperor of Indies by the King and Queen of Spain captured the imagination of the audience and met the expectations…
