Is College Worth the Money With our changing society, higher education is no longer a privilege or option, but rather a necessity. However, with the cost of college on the rise many people are questioning as to whether or not college is even worth the money. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, in an October 2013 study, “65.9 percent of 2013 high school graduates were enrolled in colleges or universities” (1). The amount of students that decide to further their education past high school still remains a high percentage; even with the countless student loans and financial aid it takes to afford a college education. Higher education offers students courses that pertain to their major and opportunities to gain work-related experience. Between a large volume of reading, short deadlines for assignments, staying up late to study for a big exam the next day, and writing a ton of papers, college can seem like it never eases up. One of the beneficial aspects of college is that it allows students to pick and choose from a wide range of courses that actually pertain to their major; it enables students to learn and study about the things that actually interests them. Higher education also presents students with the amazing opportunity to gain work-related experience in the career field that they are most interested in. Work-related experience gives students a hands-on perspective of everything they would be doing within that career. It is a great way to learn about related jobs in the same field and make new friends that have similar interests. Doing work-related experience or receiving an internship allows students to get the most out of their schooling.
