Argumentative Essay: Indiana's Merit Pay System

Superior Essays
I am in favor of a merit pay system in Indiana under the right circumstances. I think that teachers are underpaid for what we do. I also feel that there are strong economic arguments that support a merit based pay system for teachers. However, I feel that such a system is nearly if not totally impossible to implement. Indiana has suggested implementing a merit pay system based on test scores. Not only would teachers pay be based on these test scores, but so would retention. None of the states that implemented a successful merit pay system based teacher retention on test scores. Indiana wants to base whether I have a job on how well my students do on a standardized test. This is not only an illogical proposal it is insulting. As a teacher I do much more than prepare my students for …show more content…
If that was all I did my job would be so much easier. I spend hours and hours outside the normal work day developing lesson plans that teach more than simple test questions but I try to teach students how to think. I may have the summer off but I put in more hours during the school year that more than compensates for the time off. I kept track of the number of hours that worked the last month. It averaged to almost eleven hours a day. This equates to fifty hours a week which averages out to two thousand and thirteen hours in a school year. That is thirteen hours above a person that works 40 hours a week for 50 weeks a year. The time I have "off" in the summer is the same amount of time that a person is off that works forty hours a week with a two week vacation. The hours I counted did not include the hours spent working towards a graduate degree, volunteering in the community, (I am the cub master for pack 301 and help coach my children's baseball and tball teams), and being a father and husband. If all I had to do to be an effective teacher is to teach to a test, my life

Honestly, after taking Economics and Political Science in college you will understand how politicians use the idea of wage gap so wrong to get those who are not informed about the subject to believe every word they say and it works. Based on economics the statistics of the wage gap cannot be correlated only to discrimination towards women because there are other factors that affect the wage of people. For example, type of employment, state they reside, level of education and the amount of hours they have worked. Since the wage is based on an average across the nation, then it is too general to correlate it to woman discrimination only. In fact, many women go into the labor market in search of part time flexible hours job positions which usually…

The Equal Pay Right of 1963 is based on the prohibition of sex discrimination. No employer should be paid less rate based on the opposite sex. However, this was an issue where the opposite sex was making minimum wage. The Equal Pay Right occurs that the opposite sex should be paid the same because they are qualified to do same job task which stands for, “requires equal skills, effort, and responsibility, and which are performed under similar working conditions, except where such payment is made pursuant to (i) a seniority system; (ii) a merit system; (iii) a system which measures earnings by quantity or quality of production; or (iv) a differential based on any other factor other than sex (EEOC website).”…

Working only nine months out of the year, many people feel that teachers are overpaid. When you take Ohio’s average starting teacher salary, and divide it into 52 weeks you get $15.87 an hour, however, if you divide that pay in just 36 weeks, teachers make $22.91 an hour starting out. With over $7 an hour difference, many argue that teachers make enough. However, teachers do not get paid that $22.91 an hour, for they divide that pay up to last them through the summer, causing them to earn that $15.87 an hour. Others also argue that teachers have many breaks during their day.…

Most people argue and debate on whether our school should have the honor system. I would argue against this system because there are numerous amounts of things associated with the honor system, but i think not having it works better with students. As mentioned in source B, it says “Students were expected to report or confront a fellow student…. Failure to confront or report a student would result in a period of probation” With this honor system it’s saying that if the student doesn’t report the other student, he will receive a consequence.…

They think that performance pay would lead to teachers teaching to the test, make teachers not want to teach struggling students, have a harder time teaching gifted students, it may be unfair, and Could cause competition among teachers. Although these claims are valid they are not correct. This is because we could easily make a different version of performance pay that does not compare teachers, is not based on standardized testing, and that is more flexible (Corbin, Clark;). Through this, careful planning, and research, performance pay can be safely implemented, and prove an effective means of increasing student performance and paying teachers what they…
