People immigrate for a variety of reasons, but most are looking for better opportunities in their new country. Immigration often occurs when there is civil war or an internal conflict within a country such as in Syria and Afghanistan, for better education as with many Asians, or for jobs as with many Mexicans and Latin Americans. Laws can affect the influx of immigrants by allowing only certain numbers to enter. One such law was passed after September 11, 2001 due to the attack on the United States. Under this law, the US Attorney General began the National Security Entry-Exit Registration System (NSEERS), “a program that placed extra travel screening requirements on nationals from a list of 25 countries associated with an Al-Qaeda presence (and North Korea)” because the US government was concerned about who they were letting in (Immigration in the United States). He moved here because of a job offer he got from Elf Aquitaine, he chemical company he was working for in the Netherlands. They wanted him to manage all of their American factories and plants, and in order to do this he would need to move to the United States. My grandfather and grandmother considered the offer and decided to accept it because they felt there were more opportunities in the United States not only for him but his children as well.
