Argumentative Essay: Homework Should Be Banned

Improved Essays
People have debated the idea that homework should be banned for many years. The subject has been debated since World War One. In the 1960s, people wanted to ban it because they considered it to be a sin because it took away a lot of a child’s playtime. Today people argue about if homework should stay or go. Homework has shown that it can help, but it has frequently shown that homework causes stress and time constraints. For these reasons, I have chosen the side that supports the idea that homework should be banned.

One reason homework should be banned is for the health problems it causes. This author states some of the health problems caused by homework,“ We found clear connection between the students’ stress and physical impacts -- migraines, ulcers and other stomach problems, sleep deprivation and exhaustion, and weight loss (Enayati)...”, this shows some of the health problems caused by homework. Lots of these symptoms happen when students are in middle school through high school. Students during these school years have more problems with homework than kids in other grades specifically because they are growing. One of the biggest problems with homework is the stress it puts on students. This happens from all the after school activities like clubs and

Homework takes away a lot of time that you could be doing other activities with that time. In this statement the author says how homework can interfere with a student's life, “... which means less time for family and fewer opportunities to engage in their community (Parker).”, this explains why homework should be banned. Instead of students doing homework they could be playing a team sport that teaches them teamwork and discipline. Other things you could do with the time that homework takes up is communicating with family members. Homework should be banned because of the time constraints it

First of all, homework causes stress on students. We may as well just spend all day at school if we are having school at home anyways. Students should go to school, work on “school” work, then come home and not do “school” work at home. This would increase the productivity and attitudes of students. I, for one, would be in a much better mood concerning school if I knew that I didn’t have to look forward to coming home to more school work.…

To me, homework is many hours of my time wasted on relearning the stuff we did in class. Students come home every day with tons of books in their backpacks. Schools shouldn’t give out homework anymore. Children get less sleep and their social life deteriorates. Homework only makes a small impact on their performance.…

The truth is: the question about homework is opinionated and until either side side is proven, it will continue to be that way. Alfie Kohn, author of “The Case Against Homework”, says homework harms students and intrudes on family time, making relationships fragile. Homework should be banned all over America since I strongly agree that it is pointless and time wasting for not only students of all grades, but for the teachers that have to grade each student’s paper. Homework has been a problem for many students all around the country and it is statistically proven that it has been their biggest source of stress in their lives it can lead to mental and physical distress. Teachers believe they don’t give out too much homework, but when combining all the other classes that the student is taking, it’s adding up the hours that the homework takes to complete. The worst part of it is the teachers expect it by the next day or by the next time they meet. This doesn’t include that nearly six out of ten students participate…

In "Why I think All Schools should Abolish Homework," by Vicki Abeles is a personal view on why homework should be banned. The author talks about how many students are overworked. Abeles writes about her kids, and how they come home late and stay up late like a "system on overdrive. " The author argues the solution is to banned homework. As much as I agree with Abeles that a problem exists, I disagree with her solution.…

There are so many reasons people are pro homework. People say “it helps them become smarter or helps them on test,” But there is a lack of evidence where it actually supports their claims, that it helps students at all especially at such a young age. with Alfie Khon “The positive effects of homework are largely mythical.”(Khon). It also seems that homework is being forced onto younger students more often than the older ones. I remember getting tons of homework in Elementary school, and not having the time to play outside, the stress, and my parents struggling to help me on problems I didn’t know.…

With all of the stress that is already coming from school, homework only emphasizes that. There should be less homework because it takes up students time, causes a lot of stress, and causes many personal and social problems. A primary reason that students have less free time is that teachers assign an excessive amount of homework. Some students have said “Homework is all I have time for; there’s never…

There are various effective arguments I would make to support students having homework by their teachers. The first argument I would make is that homework helps students to better retain the lessons they’ve learned during the school day. Students need a lot of exercises to do to retain what they learn everyday in school. Since class time isn’t enough to provide a lot of exercises on one subject, homework is the best way to exercise what’s been learned in class. If no homework is given to students on a subject that’s been discussed in class, it’s more likely for them to forget the subject the next day.…

Homework has been linked to achieving better results and better grades, so why are some schools banning it? Studies have shown the positive and negative effects of homework, and with a moderate amount, the positive effects outweigh the negative ones. It is also needed in order to meet international education standards. Homework is important for numerous reasons, one of which being that it helps teach time management skills and discipline, especially in young children.…
