Hate Speech in Social Media According to Nelson Mandela, former President of South Africa, “For to be free is not merely to cast off one's chains but to live in a way that respects and enhances the freedom of others” (“Nelson Mandela,” 2015). Although, hate speech is thought of as a form of freedom of expression, it does not respect or enhance the freedom of others. Therefore, it is not truly a form of freedom. Hate speech is the advocacy of hatred that promote discrimination on nationality, religion, race, languages, and groups which results from violence and prejudice. Some people post insults, malicious or sexual comments which humiliates another person or degrades a group. This kind of cyberbullying has led to psychological effects on the targeted person. There are many children all around the world who are attacked by cyberbullying in school. As an obvious example, students who age around 12-18 have a problem in school, 21 percent of students are made fun or called name insult, followed by 18 percent subject of rumors, 11 percent are pushed, tripped, 6 percent are threatened with harm, or spit on, and 4 percent are tried to make the things that they want, and their property are destroyed on purpose (Robers, 2010). In addition, in the United States, in 2010 as a survey of children who age around 11 to 18 by Cyberbullying. 20 percent of survey said that they had been “cyberbullied received” such as embarrassing photos, email menace, and some videos and message text are shared without their permission. Those 20 percent of children said that they had been attacked by cyberbullying behavior at least one time, and ten percent are victims of this action by different conditions. These victims of cyberbullying feel lonely and suffer with depression because they do not have friends and other people always insult them (“Cyberbullying,” 2015). Furthermore, to illustrate, Amanda Todd was a girl who committed suicide because of cyberbullying. She was attacked from other people by posting her nude pictures. She suffered from depression because she was unaccepted from her friends and her pictures were shared on facebook. She recorded her clip on facebook and said that “ I have nobody. I need someone.” and “ Everyday I think why am I still here” Finally, after she suffered from depression and all of hate speeches, she decided to commit suicide (Burgmann, 2015).
