Currently, gun control is a major controversial topic in the United States. This ongoing debate has been fueled by, yet again a mass shooting, in Parkland, Florida, on Valentine’s Day. Too many innocent lives have been lost to mass shootings for the rest of the country to do nothing and watch it happen again. Moreover, in 2018 alone, 83 children have lost their lives to gun violence. If we take into account those who were injured, the number rises to 265 affected by gun violence (Gun Violence Archive). The country is looking at approximately “five school shootings each month” since Sandy Hook (The New York Times), two dozen children shot every day (The Washington Post), and 300 Americans shot every day which leads to 100 gun related deaths.

Students and faculty scared off the attacker by throwing backpacks and books (DutchReview). No one was injured, but imagine what the outcome could have been if this mentally ill man had access to a gun? It could have been fatal for many, but thankfully, death was avoided because of Netherlands’ strict gun laws. According to Radio Netherlands Worldwide (RNW), hunting and target shooting are deemed the only legitimate reasons to own a gun; self- defense is not considered a valid reason. Also, automatic weapons are not allowed to be owned by individuals or shot unless used in the military. Only police are allowed to carry weapons (e.g. handguns), and regularly make house-calls to gun owners, ensuring that they have the gun(s) registered in their name and that they are correctly stored. In order to become a gun owner, one must join a gun club and have a background check by the Justice ministry. Gun club membership applications include a trial period, which enables clubs to research the applicant. A criminal record would disqualify the applicant for a gun club, ultimately resulting in no gun ownership. Moreover, firearm permits are easily revoked because gun ownership is seen as a privilege. Second, most states require a psychological evaluation and signatures from a doctor or guardians/relatives. Third, depending on the state, offer informational videos on gun violence and the effects of tragic mass shootings. Fourth, increase the wait time period designated by state so they can really think about if they want to buy this gun.
