Argumentative Essay: Drought In The United States

Do you or someone you know eat fresh farm foods or depend on a job in local agriculture? If the water bill passes you may need to find a new job. The state of California is in a drought and there isn’t enough water for everybody. The farmers want the water so they can grow crops and feed the population, while the people want the water so they can take a shower or flush the toilet. I believe the government should not control the use of underground water. “...a bill that one local farmer says will not only hurt his business, but also the county’s economy” (Source 1). “To put a cap on that bloodline of water, I believe it’s dangerous, said Sanders. Everything about farming is already unpredictable, harvest to harvest” (Source 1). Like it says in the first quote, the bill will damage his business and it will also hurt the country's economy. This is because this farmer and others like him employ workers for their farm to plant, harvest, and do anything that needs to be done on a farm. If the farmer can no longer make money on his business he will no longer be able hire workers, if many farmers are no longer able to make money many workers will be put out of a job. And like it states in the second quote, farming is already unpredictable, frequently you will have a low harvest and …show more content…
“It's crazy, some of the things that are going on, but if you’re in our shoes, and you have to pay a guy $10,000 for his spot in line, that’s cheap compared to what you’re going to lose if you lose your whole orchard” (Source 3). This means that the farmers are already low on water and they are willing to pay more money just so they can produce more crops. If they are already low and water and are going to such lengths to obtain more water, if you cap the amount of water they are able to use they won’t have enough water (Source

Without regulation shortages or surpluses are a very possible outcome which could lead to either the skyrocketing or plummeting of market value. With insecure prices and instability in the market, giant ranch farmers could monopolize the market and ruin the livelihoods of small farm owners. As long as the regulations keep the market fair and stable, then the regulations are necessary. Significance: This Supreme Court case set precedence for so much besides wheat.…

After I read the book “Deadbeat Dams”, I agree with the sentiment and the arguments of the author. But as a book, it comes across more as a rant than an objective discussion of the issues. Dan Beard's publication has a great title and is filled with an insider's critical views of the national political process that results in the mismanagement of our nation's water resources. Some of the information he shared is not new - the tree rings and over allocation of water has been known for decades the same as backing up water over sand stone and evaporation. He touches on some subjects such as downstream salt issues without discussing why we have built a plant to remove salt from water for Mexico.…

What would happen if California were to run out of water completely, just because the government did not do anything to stop it from happening? Farmers and regular citizens are drilling the ground in search of groundwater. Currently there are no laws restricting or monitoring the amount of groundwater we can use, and without these laws we could run out of water. In order to conserve and save water legislation needs create regulations to monitor and control both citizens and farmers use of groundwater. Due to a lack of regulations regarding groundwater farmers are drilling the ground and taking other people's water.…

341,000 Minnesotans struggle everyday to purchase fresh fruits and vegetables due to the lack of access and poverty (Jeremy Olson). This statistic ranks Minnesota the 7th worst food desert in the United States. The US Department of Agriculture (USDA) defines food deserts as “low-income areas where grocery stores and supermarkets that sell fresh produce are over one mile away in urban areas or 10 miles away in rural areas.” Today, there are over 23 million people living in food deserts (Susie Quick). As a society, the number of food deserts needs to decrease because it leads to other health issues, such as obesity, and then can be solved by implementing a program that offers grants for mobile gardens, farmers markets and nutrition classes.…
