Mass shootings also took place in 25 other wealthy nations between 1983 and 2013, but the number of mass shootings in the United States far surpasses that of any other country included in the study during the same period of time. The U.S. had 78 mass shootings during that 30-year period. Also, shootings are more frequent. The US has the highest gun ownership rate in the world. An average of 88 per 100 people. The United States has a strong policy favoring limited regulation of firearm ownership. When Obama became president, he wanted to start gun control. He swore to protect the constitution, and in protecting the constitution, that includes protecting the amendments in the constitution. That on its own is going against Obama’s job. He wrote in the New York Times that, “Every year, more than 30 000 Americans have their lives cut short by guns. Suicides. Domestic violence. Gang shootouts. Accidents. Hundreds of thousands of Americans have lost brothers and sisters, or buried their own children.” With less than a year left in office, Obama has chosen gun control as his domestic political priority. The challenges ahead are substantial. Research on this public health issue has been censored by a 20-year-old law banning federal research on gun violence. Congress is hostile even to universal background checks. And public debate is framed around the Second Amendment of the US Constitution—“the right of the people to keep and bear Arms”(Gun violence in America: a national crisis). Some people think strong gun laws are not enough in Massachusetts.
