Argumentative Essay: Do Dogs Make A Healthy Workplace

Improved Essays
I love the idea of a calm, healthy workplace filled with satisfied employees as much as the next person. I also like the energy being put into creating such an environment, but I don't think dogs are the answer. While dogs are pretty amazing almost all of the time, I have to agree that if there is a solution to be found it has to be fair, and not everyone can just enjoy their co-workers chihuahua at their desk. As stated in the opposing argument, dogs can trigger a lot of anxiety for some individuals for many reasons: "My co-worker Gregory is anxious around dogs because he was bitten by a friend's dog." Not to say the research that found dogs to be a form of stress-relief is incorrect or invalid, but there are other options when it comes to reducing anxiety in your place of employment. Other options that don't include pet hair, allergic reactions, and excessive barking, I might add. The speaker opposed to the Bring Your Dog to Work Program also wrote that they were allergic to dogs (paragraph 2, line 2) which brings me …show more content…
We always want to know that they're being cared for to the best of our abilities. That's why, as adults, when we decide to adopt a pet we make sure that we can set aside the required time, love, and energy in our lives to do so. It shouldn't be up to our employers to help us accomplish those goals and we shouldn't expect such tolerance from fellow employees in a professional setting. In the first argument, the speaker says they think "people would be willing to work longer hours if they didn't have to leave their dogs at home. ...I'm reluctant to leave my senior dog at home alone." I just think if you don't have any way to make sure your dog is let out in the hours you are scheduled to work, you maybe shouldn't have a dog on your own. Also, if your pet is what is holding you back from picking up more hours, you should be working towards your own personal solution to fix

There’s nothing better than coming home to see the happy wag of your pup’s tail or hear the smooth purr of a cat. Some of these pets have a job though; they lead the blind, locate objects, open doors, and can even sniff out bombs while working with the police. However, these friendly faces are not just pets, they are service animals. A service animal is defined as follows, “Dogs that are individually trained to do work or perform tasks for people with disabilities” (Service Animals). This one sentence is the difference between a loveable pup and a working dog.…

In 2010, a study by Elsevier Health Sciences found that children who were allergic to dogs but grew up with a dog during their early childhood had a lower risk of developing the skin condition eczema by age four. Meaning that having a dog as a child is not only emotionally beneficial but also has health related benefits. And as for those who argue cats are better that our beloved dogs, it was discovered that children with cat allergies are 13 times more likely to develop eczema if they lived with a cat within their early childhood. In addition to helping prevent eczema, dogs can also help prevent people from developing allergies and asthma. Based on a recent study, kids who were in contact with the dried flakes of skin that fall from our pooches, or also known as ‘dog dust’ were at a lower risk of developing allergies and asthma.…

But what about all the students that could not quite get the Dr 's to prescribe them with a need for a therapy dog? With that being said, Schreiner should allow all animals, with or without them being registered as a ‘therapy pet,” to upperclassmen living in the apartments with some requirements. These requirements would be that all roommates must agree to have a pet in the apartment and putting down a pet deposit of $500 or however much Schreiner deems fit as well as making sure the pet is trained. By having the owner/ student put down a $500 deposit this would be to cover any damages made to the carpet and/or apartment the pet causes. The act of putting down a pet deposit also gives students a real-life application to what to expect when we get out of college and go to rent an apartment with a pet and the responsibility of living with a…
