2 Civil rights are a set of rights that are designed to protect american citizens from unfair treatment. Unfair treatment or discrimination can reach its hands into nearly every aspect of life such as education, employment, housing, public accommodations and more. As an american citizen, you have the right to remain silent, the right to a fair court trial, the right to vote and you also have the right to privacy. 5 The speech was full of sexual references and innuendos, but there were no technical obscenities. Matthew was suspended from school for 3 days following the event, and also was put on a list of students that were unable to attend graduation. His parents were outraged and pleaded that the school was violating his right to freedom of speech. Matthew and the school was then taken to court. 6 Does the First Amendment prevent a school district from disciplining a high school student for giving a lewd speech at a high school assembly? It is protected by the 4th amendment, that prohibits unreasonable searches a seizures. You are pulled over after giving authority a suspicion to do so. Although this is legal, there are is a possibility of many “crooked” cops who violate civil liberty and discriminate against race, ag and sexuality. The use of GPS trackers on cars and other vehicles are also protected by the 4th amendment. With that being said. What do you think could possibly stop a cop from attaching a GPS to every vehicle? There is none, because right now there is no search warrant required to do so. The same exact thing applies to cops using drug sniffing dogs in the front yard around someone’s home. These are all violations of americans civil rights.
The distance between civil rights and civil liberties are seemingly begining to dissemble. There seems to be 2 sides to every story, and each side both have reasonable and lawfully correct arguments, which only causes more and more confusion for the jury and judge listening. Suring the past 50 years or so, more and more cases that change civil rights and liberties seem to keep popping up and making a difference in law. As long as that keeps happening, maybe one day, everything will be figured
