James Joyce said "Christopher Columbus, as everyone knows, is honoured by posterity because he was the last to discover America." This quote is one hundred percent true because Christopher Columbus did not discover America, he merely expanded the idea of it. Columbus actually never set foot in America, and Vikings had already settled in the eleventh century. These are only two of the reasons Columbus day is an embarrassment to this country. So we need to take down Columbus’s name and rename this holiday after something more fitting, like “Recognition Day”. This day would recognise both Columbus, but more importantly the idea of America and the Native Americans that lived there.
