He had to get financed by someone with the money in order to make the journey happen. After asking many people he finally came across King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella of Spain. They agreed to sponsor Columbus under one condition, he had to repay them with riches and gold from the new land. When Columbus arrived in “India” or America, he started exploring the islands around it. At every island the Native Americans, which Columbus called Indios, would give him and his crew whatever they asked for. In the Letter from Columbus’s First Voyage (1493) Columbus himself clearly states, “The Indians would give whatever the seller required: as, for instance, an ounce and a half or two ounces of gold, or thirty or forty pounds of cotton,” and then later on he stated, “cotton and gold for the price of fragments of bows, glass, bottles, and jars;”. Columbus was unfair and unjust with the Natives, trading and practically stealing from them.
