Argumentative Essay: Black Friday

Thanksgiving, a once unassuming and gratifying holiday where people gathered from near and far to gives thanks and partake in a meal together. Perhaps it was the blessing, that was not always said before other meals, that caused dinner conversation to be more pleasant. Afterward, table games were often played or a holiday special was watched and some folks would snuggled up for a nap. People would reunite in the kitchen to share leftovers and then go their separate ways basking in the glow of the warm, memorable day. You see, there were no hurries on this leisurely holiday. They constantly check their cell phones for the latest deal postings. They justify their behavior without considering the hurt feelings by those who are present and, especially, their host who has taken great time and effort to prepare for the celebration. Best Buy, Walmart, and many other retailers require employees to work on, what is typically, a customary day off. After their shift, they are exhausted from an extraordinarily busy day and consider themselves an inconvenience if the holiday is rescheduled on account of them. There are no words to console the injury or loss of a loved one who chose to shop on “Black Friday” and, more so, for the minimum-waged worker who had no choice but to report to work as directed. Their injury or memory may sadly replace the Thanksgiving holiday for all time.
These consequences should convince shoppers that celebrating Thanksgiving should take priority over “Black Friday”. Who needs the stress of crowds; why not, rather, embrace the solace that awaits them. By changing their stance, shoppers would not show-up at stores, retailers would, once again, close their doors and staff would no longer have to work and, happily, rejoin the table. Thanksgiving is a precious holiday to be cherished as a thankful and peaceful time that it was always meant to

What, to the homeless man, is Thanksgiving? I answer: a holiday that reminds him, more than any other hungry day in the year, the gluttony and selfishness to which he is the constant prey. To him, your feasts are ridiculous; your thankful humility, just empty words; your giving attitude, bitterly ironic; your television specials, a mockery of his suffering; your holiday spirit, vanishing in an instant; your clamoring for generosity and kindness, painful to his ears; your pumpkins and autumn leaves, your peace and togetherness, with all the Macy’s Parades and cranberry sauce, are, to him mere frivolity, excess, wastefulness, greed, and close-fisted behavior- a tablecloth thrown over miserly deeds which would shock a room full of businessmen.…

Americans and others around the world are often struck with what is deemed “shopaholic syndrome.” The symptoms of this are spending preposterous amounts of time and money shopping.
