I agree with you when you say that the women do not seem to care about the war. I believe Martha never mentions anything about the war as a way to ignore it; I think she goes on about other things in her not to be selfish but because she doesn't want to deal with the reality of what is going on or maybe she doesn't believe it is her place to talk about it.
