The Pros And Cons Of Early School Start Times

There are many problems that arise in High School that affects not only students, but parents as well. These problems include dress code, cell phones, and overabundance of homework. However, one of the problems that have come about recently is school start times. Some people say that school should continue to be started early, while others say that starting later would be beneficial to all students. While there is a large divide between the two, early school start times have a negative impact on students health, academics and safety. However, later school start times would greatly improve these three problems.
Before we get into the major discussion of negative impacts of starting school early, let’s look at the negative effects that starting school later can have. The major concern that school administration has with starting school later is transportation, especially students who ride the

Many high school students have jobs that keep them until ten or eleven o’clock at night, then the student is expected to go home, shower, work on homework, and get the recommended eight or nine hours of sleep. This becomes a challenge for many students because students are given, on average, three and a half hours of homework every night, according to a poll of public school teachers (Klein). As a recent graduate of a local high school, these findings represent a majority of the students who had jobs in high school. Throughout conversations with my peers, I learned that many of them would get home late, and be so tired that they would skip doing their homework and go to bed. This had a negative impact on their academics because they would lose points because their homework wasn’t done. If a student continually skips doing their homework because of early school start times, and lack of sleep, those lost points will add up and keep dropping their overall
