The Social Network: Movie Analysis

The movie The Social Network, talks about the life of Mark Zuckerberg and the rise of the social media website, Facebook. The movie brings about abroad range of issues that social network brings about such as, cyber bullying and hacking. It also raises the question: Is social media cutting us out from reality? We see in the movie that in college, Mark spends more time on his computer than he does out with friends. Many believe that social networks, like Facebook and Twitter, have brought us farther away from reality; a negative aspect. But, social networks can also be viewed in a positive in that they connect the world together like it’s never been connected before. In one of the opening scenes, when Mark gets back to his room after breaking up with Erica, he begins to blog about her in what is very well cyber bullying, using foul language and mocking her and her family (8:10). As the scene progresses, we are brought to a shot of Erica in her room reading the blog her roommate just showed her. She is visually upset as the scene cuts to a view of her face which was brought to tears. In today’s society cyber bullying is at an all-time high, “over half of adolescents and teens have been bullied online, and about the same number have engaged in cyber bullying (bullyingstatistics.org).” Cyber bullying is a big deal because often times, like in this case with Mark Zuckerberg, because it is out there for everyone to see, not just the victim.
