Poverty, while on the surface is the state of being poor, is a constant battle and an epidemic that plagues our world. The issue of poverty is so commonplace that it is apparent in every town, city, and country. Families are torn apart, lives are lost, and conditions are worsening. A staggering amount of people live in poverty while a fraction of the population, the rich, account for the vast majority of the wealth. Poverty is a critical issue that needs to be addressed. Majority of humanity is impoverished. A matter of fact, at least 80% of people live on $10 or less a day (Source B). As stated before, only 6 billion U.S. dollars was spent on basic education in 1998 compared to 11 billion which was spent on ice cream in Europe (Source B). Ice cream is not as important as providing people in need with the education necessary to alter their lives. Without education, impoverished children's’ lives are set. Their future is dim and full of struggle and hardships. Education can reach these kids and provide them with new opportunities to change their financial situation. Funding and spending should shift from unnecessary items to things like education and water to help people in need. If a fraction of the 780 billion spent on military was used for these causes, real change will occur. Individuals can certainly help too. As Andrew Carnegie suggested in The Gospel of Wealth, the wealthy can aid the struggling by putting opportunities within reach. Many believe that this is simply saying that the rich should just give away their money as handouts. However, as Carnegie put it, “the main consideration should be to help those who will help themselves” not those who are looking to simply take (Source D). It is impossible for the impoverished to escape their financial prison if no opportunities are given to them.
